I decided in 2022 to figure out which oils on the Walmart shelf are best. I know Amsoil and Redline are great oils, but they are more or less mail order and I wanted to stick with what is on the shelf at Walmart. The rules for this test are it has to be available at Walmart where I can walk-in and buy it...and it has to be API SP.

Oils in the various reports are the following...Quaker State Ultimate Protection. Mobil 1 5W30 Extended Protection, Supertech Advanced, Supertech High Mileage, Supertech Full Synthetic, Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, and Quaker State Euro 5W40 (its really a robust 5W30). Oils which will be tested in the future are Castrol Edge, Valvoline Advanced, and Valvoline Maxlife.

My personal conclusions so far are that Supertech Advanced is best for 3000 mile oil change intervals and Quaker State 5W40 Euro is best for 5000 mile intervals. Please come to your own conclusions. I know this is not a scientific test of the various oils. I simply dont have the resources to conduct a real scientific testing.

Redline produces excellent motor oil for use in gas and diesel engines. Amsoil produces one of the very worst motor oils for diesel engines despite it costing twice as much.

Before the 2017 engines and motor oils went into production they were exhaustively tested to be sure that there would not be abnormal wear with the lower multi viscosity oils. There is now no real difference in motor oils that meet the new API standard for use in gas engines for vehicles produced after 2017. For older engines and in particular very high mileage engines there are special motor oils available engineered for this application.

In terms of iron wear there isnt much of a difference. The difference in my opinion is in shear stability or the ability to stay in grade.

Quaker State 5W40 Euro API SP starts a little higher in terms of viscosity and thus it stays in 5W30 grade. These Euro 5W40s are basically heavier duty 5W30s. I think this is the way to go. Start a little higher in viscosity and you have an oil with good iron wear and stays in 5W30 range.

Switching from Motorcraft 5w30 blend to Walmart fully synthetic had a major drop in wear metals on my old 2011 3.5 Eco.

For my current truck I'll get baseline numbers for whatever unknown dealer oil and do my usual Blackstone tests going forward. It's cheap and I'm curious. I test the oil in my bike too which can easily run 10k miles if I wanted.

You really need to run oil for multiple changes to see a trend. Bouncing around your numbers will vary with all the different blends that all meet spec but are slightly different.

The funny thing is that Motorcraft blend is the only one of its kind on the Walmart shelf. Most everything else is full synthetic. I dont know anyone but Ford that says semi-synthetic. Even GM says...full synthetic....

My local Walmart only has Pennzoil Platinum. Would be very convenient for me if they also carried Ultra Platinum.

I change every 9000 miles. I have used this oil in 3 Ford F150s.

2004 5.4 traded in @ 240,000 miles. Motor ran strong as it did when brand new on trade in. No engine issues.

2013 5.0 currently has 205,000 miles and still has power. No engine issues whatsoever.

2021 3.5 Eco with only 11,000 miles.

I'm sold.

Yes, can't find ultra anywhere without ordering I think around here.
