To everyone waiting on a Comma 3x, make sure you have a long enough USB-C 3.1 cable available. I had a few I could swear were 3.1 but of course they weren't. They are pretty scarce here in Maine so I may have to wait a couple days longer.

An extension cable like the one @Ajzride linked up-thread will also work. Just make sure it's 3.1 or better. If the packaging says "speeds up to 480Mbps", that is 2.0 and will not work.

Also make sure the USB-C cable is GEN2. So 3.1 Gen 2 or 3.2 Gen 2.

The camera connector on the IPMA is different than other LVDS connectors I've seen before.

Anyone know what this type of connector is called?

This camera connector is called a High Speed FAKRA Mini-Coaxial connector (HSFM). The cameras are connected via GMSL.

This has no bearing on the Comma device, I'm just idly musing about future possibilities. There are GMSL modules for the Nvidia Jetson platform, and OpenPilot has been ported there.

So far my experience has been that the Comma camera provides better performance than the Ford camera in bright sunlight. since I can’t see what the Ford camera does like I can the Comma, I’m left to assume that being so high and close to the windshield causes the Ford camera to see a lot of glare and sunbursts which affect it.

That’s as may be, but my curiosity is about OpenPilot functionality with more of an OEM feel and nothing hanging off of the windshield or on the dash. Idle musings.

Here's the link Ajzride linked for me which has the benefit utilizing the right right-angle for the usb-c out of the Comma 3: https://www.amazon.com/UseBean-Extension-L-Shape-Extender-Nintendo/dp/B0C3CNF849/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3QVBSGUY6X1FW&keywords=10'+USB+C+gen+2+extension+cable&qid=1694905175&sprefix=10'+usb+c+gen+2+extension+cable,aps,141&sr=8-3&th=1

Also, you might get one of these small ethernet patch cables if you don't want to have a long roll-up under your dashboard: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001UWNM16?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

I deleted the link to that one because the right angle doesn't fit inside the Comma3X, it's a really tiny hole and I'm still trying different cables and adapters to find something that fits. I'm on about the 5th try so far.

The one I linked is not the adapter but rather the extension cord. That should work just fine right? As it's still utilizing the stock cord.

You are correct, I got myself confused, been through too many cables this week.

BlueCruise is now an option on a 2024 XLT, this drastically lowers the entrance cost into L2 ADAS. An XLT with OP would be a killer price for the functionality.

You and me both. I have learned that a usb 3.1 gen 2 cable over 3.3 feet long simply does not exist in Maine. Waiting on one to arrive Friday. Then immediately headed out on a road trip, which means I get to put it through its paces but no time for hacking on it yet. 😤

I am going to recommend everyone start with:

installer.comma.ai/commaai/ford-comfort

Ford does steering completely different than every other manufacturer (who would have guessed) and this branch is tailored to that. Much less twitchy of a steering wheel using that branch.

If I read correctly, BC functionality if not required by OP, it only needs ACC which is part of 360 Assist.

I know the state is far from real world testing, but if you want we can meetup and test on my 2023 XLT + 360 Assist, I guess the hardest part would be to get access to the IPMA.
