So I have a 2022 Lariat 4x4 Supercrew with the 5.0 with the 502A and the max tow package.

I wasn’t liking the way the truck was handling the snow here in MN so I swapped in a set of 2018 F150 wheels I picked up for cheap and installed Nokian Hakkapeliita LT3’s. I noticed a big improvement afterwards.

Unfortunately pulling out the truck today to wash my wife’s car I found this gem on the floor. I saw the structural washer and immediately knew ithas to be suspension or drivetrain related.

Well my brother pointed me to thread on the other F150 forums and yup identical looking sheared bolt. I haven’t pulled the wheels off yet to check, but I’m 100% sure that’s what it is.

So has anyone else had this issue??!!

edit: truck has 6,998mi

It's already reaching a legendary status on the forums.
Mostly reported to affect a specific range of production dates.

Sounds like it would cheap and quick to just have it replaced with a new bolt regardless

I’m little surprised it hasn’t been a recall yet.

Assuming they can get the remaining section of the bolt out of the axle.

Easy enough to keep a set handy

Fair… but this isn’t my project car. I’ve got two of them already… I don’t need another one. This vehicle is just supposed to work and haul stuff 😉

I’m curious how tight that washer is in the hub.

does it seem more sheared? Or tensile break?

Yes, there are multiple threads on multiple forums about it. I haven't had a problem yet, but I have a spare set of bolts on hand. I'd rather spend 15 minutes replacing them myself than be without my truck for weeks while the dealer dicks around.

Definitely seems like shear. Looking at the bolt I’m guessing it was compromised at the install and then corrosion and operational vibration finished it off. This would explain why it was not seen on the assembly line.

However I know how their assembly line works. I guarantee that Ford has the installation torques documented for these axle nuts with their DC tools for ever truck manufactured. So it will nust be a matter of reviewing th

I suspect their was an error in the torque call out for their standard work and they didn’t adjust it until later on. However, I don’t know why this wasn’t caught with the initial 2021 model builds. This means that there are now thousands of impact trucks out there.

Wouldn’t want to be the engineer responsible for that oops.

what are the consequences if one’s axle bolt shears in the long run?
Depends on the dealership.
Most appear to take the least effort approach and rather than extract the broken bolt, they order the whole axle assembly. Which isn't a terrible thing for the truck owner if they are actually available and can be acquired quickly.

But you can imagine how varied that experience has been.

Some fellas have had the mechanic actually extract the bolt and replace it with the new torque spec. Similar to if you repaired it yourself. Of course this assumes that nothing has had an opportunity yet to damage the hub or tube or differential. I guess if it looks like nothing had moved much from where it's intended to be located, things should be just fine otherwise?

I had my passenger side rear break and the day after I got it back from the dealer the other side broke. They've replaced the axle both times.
