This is a pretty cool video of a blown Gen 4 5.0L complete teardown.
This doesn't look like a Ford dealership, the engine has 5K miles on it, it is a 22' model so it has to be under warranty. Not sure why would they not go to Ford for warranty replacement (unless of course they mistreated it which voided the warranty).

I searched the forum - to the best of my ability - if this was posted before but couldn't find anything. If dupe - my apology.

The video is by #l8rhp. I've studied several of their Whipple install videos to help me understand the process. They are a private shop and among other things, made a bunch of supercharger install videos. In this video the truck had a Whipple Stage 2 installed. Whipple does not offer a power train warrantee on the Stage 2. The Ford power train warrantee is void too at this point too. The only option the owner has is find a shop to fix it.

Here is the video showing the Whipple and engine being removed before the tear down video.

If the owner installed a Whipple Stage 1 with the power train warrantee or the Ford Performance Whipple supercharger (basically a Whipple Stage 1) that helps, provided an ASE tech installed it. Even then it has monetary limits on what Whipple or Ford Performance covers.

There are so many things we don't know leading up to this. Bad fuel, wrong fuel, fuel additives, over rev'ing (most likely what happened) bad spark plugs, misfires, racing it over and over, burn out after burn out, more... we just don't know. In the engine removal video above they speculate the CATs melted and caused excessive back pressure causing #7 to let go, but they also think the Fumoto drain valve caused the failure ;)

I think you meant Gen 3.....
Coyote Generation 1 - 2011-2014
Coyote Generation 2 - 2015-2017
Coyote Generation 3 - 2018-2023
Coyote Generation 4 - 2024-Present

Thanks for the update and clarifications!

AFAIK, in the F-150, it is Gen 4 2021-Present. Gen 3 was 2018-2020, but I may be wrong.

Only time I've ever seen a piston disintegrate like that was due to over-reving the engine, basically piston speed was too high, which is why the damage was as minimal as it was, the connecting rod stayed within the cylinder bore.

Does anyone know if the coyote has cast pistons? or forged, or ??

A race shop I worked at in college used GM 5.3 & 6.0 LS engines, they tried pushing one to it's limits with a 7,400rpm rev-limit. For the LS pistons it was too much, gotta keep them below 6,800rpm or this same thing happens.

In that second video, they actually start it and drive it into the shop! I can't believe it starts! The videos also provide a good look at things after the cab is removed.

I've read several articles about extended oil changes and the marketing and science behind them. Personally, I change every 5K with full synthetic. The oil passages are so small these days you want that oil flowing. Perhaps the engine failure here is related some how..... the world may never know....

Thanks for starting this thread @sbi

F-150 is 4th gen 2021-Current, Mustang just got the gen 4 for 2024. The Mustang just migrated over to our F-150 5.0 versions short block (block casting, connecting rods, etc.) per the part #’s this year. Can’t really call an F-150 5.0 after 2021 a gen 3. The block casting is different as well as the pistons, rods, crank vs an 18-20 which is considered a 3rd gen engine. The Mustang and F-150 have been running a different short block from 2021-2023, now they are harmonized again.

5.0 runs sinter forged rods, forged crank, and hyper pistons. The factory redline is 6,800 rpm and it shifts there in sport mode every gear. The LS motors and Hemi aren’t forged cranks (barring the 6.2), so the Coyote is capable of more rpm than a LS. Valve train comes into the coyote advantage too but I’ll save you the novel.

This piston failure seems to be from poor tuning. At 7,000 rpm+ cylinder pressures on a 12:1 engine are immense. If you get too aggressive on your spark timing you run the risk of catastrophic detonation. Tuning is an art, not be be done sloppily. That piston going out like that and the rod still in the bore tells me this thing pre-detonated at extremely high rpm.

In that tear down video they show the infamous kevlar oil pump belt. Granted the engine has low miles but still, kinda neat to see it and perhaps even show us how much has to come off to get to it 🤷‍♂️

my take away...the engine did its best to chew, swallow and digest that piston...
wholly cow it was everywhere.

cool videos

Amazes me the money spent on things like this.... done wrong. Ford Racing and other companies sell everything from shortblocks to complete engines for this kinda stuff.
Throwing an SC or blower on an a stock engine is just asking for trouble. Intake and exhaust ports need to handle the flow being pushed, the valves of course have to handle that as well. Spinning a standard crank, cams and bla bla with stock pushrods and pistons at thousands of boosted RPMs, just not gonna last.
Man....
Now before everyone starts givin me crap about this or that, Ive been building engines pretty much my whole life.
Here is an engine I put in one of my cars (built by Dick Flynn, former Shirley Muldowney engine builder), naturally asperated not a million HP or torque but I used all Ford\Shelby American parts to keep things 'original'.

We flowed the heads and ported them three times before we got the numbers we wanted, then from there chose our cam and valves. To this day this engine is as strong as an Ox.

I am posting this because if you want your truck to be a Ferrari, PLEASE order a race engine with internals that can handle what you throw at it... otherwise it will end up like this truck and other blown up trucks we have see posted here.

You can say what you want about internals and such, But if you use the wrong fuel, Your going to have a bad time.

( Tech guy tearing down engine on 2nd video said it was wrong fuel that caused the failure.)
