While filling up my gas tank, I topped off 2 more clicks after the 1st click. After I pulled out the nozzle, an enormous amount of gas started gushing out the filler neck. If I had been standing right in front of the filler instead of on the side i would have been sprayed with gas.

I’ve been topping off 3 clicks forever with other vehicles and my new F150 is the first vehicle with gas gushing out like that.

How many clicks do you guys do?

I read somewhere that adding more gas after the pump clicks off is bad....something about a sensor in the fuel filler neck/line. Could have been for another vehicle, but can't remember 🤷‍♂️

With a 36 Gal tank, I'm not overly concerned about another 1/4 gal. If I'm sweating it, I'd buy a 5 gal can and throw it in the bed.

Well the click says it’s full. I’ve always assumed overfilling was playing with fire lol.

Plus, even for gas not spilling out, it’s a bad practice. The extra gas goes into your charcoal canister as liquid. The canister is made to help with vapors (EPA). If it goes bad from the liquid, you get a check engine light.

Adding more fuel after the click runs the risk that you fill the charcoal cannister with liquid fuel. A result of this is evap faults and an engine light. Doing it enough times will eventually ruin the cannister completely.

I remember reading somewhere, I know, That helps, That on the '21 and up Ford says to stop at the first click or fuel spillage would happen.

My 2012 and my 2021 were the same. When the auto-stop shuts it off, you're done. Any more and you're likely to dump fuel onto your shoes. So from my perspective Ford's fill system is Full when the pump thinks its full.

On another note, you should never top off a fuel tank. That extra volume you are filling with fuel is the expansion space for your tank. The fuel is stored underground, so it is kept around 50-70 degF. Once it is in your vehicle it will warm up to ambient temp, in the summer can be upwards of 100 degF and the fuel will expand. Without the expansion space you are dumping fuel out onto the ground, you may just not know it.

This thread was helpful.

I guess I'm just too used to older vehicles. How much one can take after the first click, can depend on the pump, the approach angle, different vehicles etc.

Didn't know anything about a charcoal filter that could be spoiled.
