I have a buddy in the market for a new truck, he isnt interested in my setup, which is SCrew, 6.5 bed, max tow, 3.5 with 3.55 gears. He wants the 5.0 with the taller gears. Does anyone have any real world fuel economy experience to share?
Thanks in advance.
For the record, my truck tows like a beast. Fuel economy is OK when I run premium fuel and keep the speed reasonable.

I’ve only got 2500 on my truck so not a lot of data. Short trips I’m at 17. Pulling a 5k horse trailer gets me 10. Long interstate runs at 70 I’m at 19. That’s a mix between normal and slippery mode. Tow haul mode when pulling the trailer. I’m very happy with the setup.

I only have around 500 miles so far, but I am averaging 18.2 MPG between highways and country roads. Haven't towed with it yet.

Does the 5.0 come with the duals in BAP?

Taller gears, so you mean 3.31s?

When 100% stock, I saw 22-23mpg on the highway with pump gas. I never towed with it in that configuration.

My terminology may be wrong. He wants the 3.73 gears.

I have a 22 RCBS 5.0 w3.73 gears.

I was averaging 24.2 mpg in the summer. Down to 19.9 in the winter with the cold temps and crap gas.

Rear end dont have that much effect on MPG with the 10 speed.

I was looking for 3.73 but only found 3.31 on dealer lots in February, I was very surprised by this 4th generation 5.0L and bought the 3.31. I was also likely more budget oriented just graduating college last year, so I just knew I wanted the 5.0L and a locker for my key options. Just food for thought as I went in with the attitude 3.73 or nothing, until the test drive. Only 3.73 were like $70,000 trucks that I found. The 21+ 5.0 Ford changed the power curve with a lot of new variables and it gets into torque sooner than last gen, so it doesn’t feel soft in the low end like the older ones I’ve driven. I tow my 20 foot open bow boat and steel roller trailer which is about 4,000 pounds with fuel and gear. That’s about it for my towing ventures.

If he hauls heavier than that then I’d say the 3.73 may be a good option to go for, but the 3.31 is no slouch with 410 lb ft of torque thrusting through it either.

Gearing seems to have the largest impact on towing charts from Ford. So as long as you are within Ford’s GCWR, it’s fine.

https://www.ford.com/cmslibs/conten...eneral/pdf/guides/21Towing_Ford_F150_Dec3.pdf

The ten speed really helps in these trucks, I’ve been driving around my 2001 Navigator with the 32V 5.4V8, 3.73 gearing and a 4R100 the last week and it’s a completely different experience.

There’s a few threads in the 5.0 subforum with MPG data as well as the gear ratios in most instances.

Myself, I have tried getting good MPG on my truck and about 20MPG is the best I see driving carefully in mostly city driving. Driving regularly, I get between 12-15MPG. The one tank of highway driving was at 21MPG and I could have probably done better had I driven slower. Also, a fair amount of my mileage is towing, though; I actually get better MPG towing!

Yesterday I towed a little 5x8 uhaul enclosed trailer 444 miles and I fed my thirsty little beast $115 dollars of gas and had to fill up again this morning for another $65 or risk running out when I took the trailer back.

I don't check mileage because there's no point in my opinion. If the truck is running right and you are getting crummy mileage what are you going to do? Trade it? No. The 5.0 with 3.73 is too much fun.

I've never reset the average display and yesterdays adventure drug it down to 17 something from over 18 something calculated by the truck.

Driving down interstate 80 around 71-73 mph it was dropping below 15 according to the truck.

I have a 2 door shortbed 4x4.

For some reason Il was charging $3.69 a gallon while next door in Iowa it was only $3.19.
