Yesterday I decided to change out the transfer case (TC) fluid. This is an incredibly simple procedure. However I have the TC skid plate which has to come off unless you want the fluid to drain onto the plate and make a gigantic mess.

The skid plate is attached to the frame with 8mm bolts and captured nuts. When I went to remove the two bolts on the main frame both captured nut retainers broke inside the frame and expletives were spoken! To get the bolts out I ended up cutting the bolt heads off. Luckily I was able to fish out the captured nut and attached bolt, minus the head, from the frame.

When I reinstall the TC skid plate and new hardware I will be removing the factory applied loctite and using anti-seize instead.

Sounds painful.

I assume these are the standard clip in nuts on the frame used by OEM skid plates too?

Note to self, don't over torque truck nuts.

I have the Raptor skid plate I'll be putting on soon with these same style nuts.

Mosey, Could you give us some pointers on the language you used when that happened? I know I need an expansion of the breadth of mine. The same old words make me weary.
