Got stuck in some deep snow. Put it into 4H and rocked it to get unstuck and this happens. Sitting here waiting for the tow truck. How in the F**K does this happen on a brand new truck that is DESIGNED for off roading!!??!? 😡

Guessing 4H in reverse?
Seems to be the common theme with the front differential cracking open but I thought that was limited to the 21 models.

Do you have any mods like a lift?

Well yeah, have to go 4H in reverse to rock free. No mods, completely stock.

All the threads I saw on this on few forums of googling it seemed like everyone was in reverse in 4H. Splits in half but I'm confused how that would ever be an issue. Only happens with the front differential without 4A. I did 4H reverse often in deep snow to back up my driveway in winter with my Gen 12. Not sure what changed with the newer differentials to cause so many threads online. 🤷‍♂️

I believe the forward differential is the exact same between TOD and ESOF trucks

I dunno maybe the clutch helps somehow relieve the stress that causes it?
I've only used 4A once this year since winter hasn't shown up yet but I know the annual March snow is on the way.

I do hope that @EcoBeastCA is able to get a quick repair at dealer for this issue.

This is "a thing"? I have not heard about this. I have the 21 Lariat screw 3.5 L, FX4 w/3.55. Can you say, do I need to be concerned about this now? TIA

I don't think it is a major concern. There are plenty of posts you can dig up online doing your own research on it though. Most seem to believe a casting defect but who really knows. Consider 200k (just a guess) trucks and 20 posts easy to find online with this issue. 99.99% of trucks are fine.

Are you going to replace it or dealer it? I'd love a handful of photos of the parts to see why these randomly decide to grenade their pumpkins since ford is silent. Based on general recall statistics there should be about 300 instances of this already. Need NHTSA filings, this could leave one stranded. Ford pulled the torsen from the raptor R for a reason. Forget half shafts, the diff housing is a clear liability.

I didn't think it was that widespread. I know it is easy to find posts here and other forums happening to many trucks. We all know everyone comes online to complain so I always assume majority of trucks are trouble free.

What really concerns me is that this happens in 4H where stresses are NOT at their max. Using my STX as an example with a Low range on the T-Case of 2.72:1, and the 10R80’s 4.69:1 1st gear ratio, and a 3.31:1 final drive; in 4L that means my final drive ratio is like 42:1. Multiply the 5.0L’s 410 lb ft of torque through all that or step up to the 3.5L’s 500 lb ft and that’s some serious twist this diff needs to hold. It’s concerning to see failures in 4H instead of 4L to be honest.

A lot of people forget about torque multiplication in an ICE vehicle. This is why in that silly tug of war that EV channel did they were shocked the 5.0 F-150 was able to tug on par with the Lightning Platinum. In Low Range a 5.0L is actually getting more torque to the ground than the Lightning EV is capable of at its best. Then the 5.0 broke traction and was finally pulled spinning its wheels since it was 1,000 lbs + lighter (it was inevitable, weight wins). Low Range puts serious torque down through multiplication like leverage on a handle, and stresses are high. This hunk of aluminum seems underwhelming for the task.

I will be crossing a torsen front diff retrofit off my long list of things to do to my truck...

Unless all front diffs are affected?

Look what I picked up yesterday. This notice is only a few days late for me. Lol

Thought this was only 21s. Maybe it was dropped somewhere before being mounted in the truck.
