Unless you know of problems with your current truck I would hold onto it and continue to drive it. 170,000 miles is not a lot and many vehicles have more than 250,000 miles and the original engines and transmissions.

The sales tax and DMV fees on a new truck is going to be more than a transmission rebuild should that be needed. You know what scheduled maintenance is needed for your truck and the probable cost per year and can factor that in against the cost of new truck.

A new truck is not going to be any safer or provide significant gains in fuel economy over your 2012 truck. You may be able to get a larger fuel tank or different gearing and the 10-speed transmission but that is about it.

I agree with all you have said and as a result am leaning towards continuing to drive the 2012. It is a solid ride and handles the trailer very well. The Powerboost engine is intriguing and may be in my future, eventually.
