I'm driving a 2012 Ecoboost, pulling a 7,000 dry weight, fifth wheel camper. Works great, but I have 170,000 miles on the truck (over 100,000 towing) and think it's time for an upgrade.

I'm looking at a new 2023 Powerboost. My post here is to ask for real world examples of your towing rig. What are you pulling with your Powerboost and how happy are you with the set up?

Thanks in advance for your help!

If you don't already know it a couple of passes at a CAT scale (with and without trailer) to determine your trailer's actual loaded-for-travel pin weight would be an invaluable starting point, IMO.

I suspect that Payload will be your challenge / limiting constraint with the Powerboost. Forum search for "powerboost payload" will yield some real-world payload sticker values posted by members. As you may know, real-world payload sticker values can vary a lot (lower) from the advertised maximum possible depending on truck-specific configuration and options.

Just for your consideration, Have Fun! :)

The Powerboost trucks are notorious for low payload ratings, so make sure you check that before buying!

My 2021 Lariat (Non-powerboost) 4x4, SuperCrew,6.5'box, glass roof, 2kW ProPower, with Max tow and my Payload is 1,696lbs. Which with my bumper tow camper hitch weight of 836lbs cuts my people/cargo in the truck down to 860lbs. I know 5th wheels are at or above 1,000lbs on the truck bed...so just be careful there, you might need a limited option XLT to get enough payload for your camper.

7,000 lb and following the normal rule of scale of 10% tongue weight, means 700 lb on the tongue which would be completely doable for you. I have a Platinum PowerBoost with the sunroof and I think my towing capacity says 1180 if I recall correctly.
In all of the overweighted combos I have seen I've never seen one under a thousand pounds. 700 should be cake.

that 10% tongue is for bumper tow, not 5th wheel. The 5th wheel's are 15-25%

Short story: you'll be overloaded.

More info: Maybe not on the actual towing weight of the trailer, but on the payload/hitch/pin weight.

Consider the total weight of your 5th wheel hitch, itself. Couple hundred pounds, all in. The mounting bracket, the hitch itself. These are all payload. And the BP lack payload, heavily.

Ford F-150 Towing Question 1708356551535

My 2021 PB was a custom build that kept payload in mind. I have a decent payload of 1422 pounds.

My trailer is a bit over 5100 pounds empty. If I assume a loaded weight at a MAXIMUM of 8000# (toy hauler) then my minimum tongue weight is 800#

So that's

1422-800 - 400 (gf and myself) -200 (camper topper)= 22# remaining payload. I'm definitely overladen on payload if I assume that 8000# trailer and 10% tongue. But that's worst case weight.

Since 5th wheels have such a heavy pin weight it would be absolutely no problem to exceed your payload rating. And I wouldn't be surprised if you're overladen with your current truck.

This, 5th wheels are a different animal.

Not comparable to the OP's rig but FWIW I tow a much smaller 5th wheel RV (see link in my signature block) and my loaded-for-travel pin weight is ~17%+ of the actual trailer weight (my non-Powerboost payload value is also in my signature block).

Nothing beats actual CAT scale data for this sort of evaluation, that should be easy enough for the OP to get if he doesn't already have it.

And yes, ALL the aftermarket stuff in the truck (hitch mount, hitch itself, occupants and cargo) MUST be considered in the evaluation.

Considering you have been using a 2012 F150, and it wasn't a "unicorn" HDPP version, you might be able to find a 2021-2023 XL with a decent Payload to match.

This is the company's 2021 Powerboost Payload sticker

However, you can't order a 2024 in XL trim with the Powerboost motor.

Someone recently posted that Granger Ford was able to edit their 2024 order (Powerboost) to include the Tow Mirrors.

So hopefully that's just a typical Ford Build website snafu that doesn't line up with the official ordering system?

That 2025# on a PB is an impressive number, Kudos on a carefully specified truck!

Pulling what ever is not your issue as long as you have a 6.5' bed.

Payload is the stickler on a PB went from a 19 701a Platinum max tow to a 21 XLT 302a PB and still the PB was overloaded.

Traded the PB off for a 22 2.7EB Payload package truck now have 150#'s to spare.

Run of the mill off the lot 3.5 EB or 5.0 with towing will have more payload than even the most stripped down PB could ever dream of.

Truck is 3 years old and has never been to the dealership for a warranty repair. It's been a good one. And is meticulously maintained by a specific employee who cherishes the dang thing. :)

On occasion it hauls a Bunkhouse to some remote airport somewhere and houses a maintenance team to rescue an aircraft. Otherwise it's used for all kinds of aircraft maintenance support.

Oh good catch. I saw his post and your picture and thought that was his trailer... yeah, 7k 5th wheel is better than cake... cake and ice cream.
