Went to install the Ford accessories bed extender as I like the collapsable feature.

Went to install and the middle hole in my XLT bed isn't threaded? Am I missing something here?
Can't install the extender without that middle bolt being installed to secure it to the truck.

i installed one on my 2016 and also didn't have a threaded insert...took tail light out and used a nut with lock-tight to secure.

They’re never threaded. They’re meant to just run a bolt in and cut its own threads with an impact driver. As long as it has the correct size bolt

The bed extender for the 21/22's come with a nut for the bolt, you are supposed to take the tail lights out and put the nut on the back side. This is a change from the previous generation trucks.

Hmm. I had the extender for my '17 (gen13) and the holes were compatible, and threaded, in my '21 so I moved it over. It did NOT come with a backing nut, my holes were threaded though on my '21 I had to bore the liner out a little by pushing really hard with an impact driver to get started, then finished off with a torque wrench to the spec ft-lb.

Here are pics from 2017 truck:

and 2021 truck:

Perhaps the NEW extender has thinner bolts to feed through to a supplied backing nut. But the extender I got for gen13 threaded perfectly.

WTF Ford, this is a motor vehicle; not IKEA furniture, try having some text explaining WTH you expect people to do:

Ah, my extender did not come with the nut for the back of the bolt nor that instruction pamphlet. Possible my dealer provided me with previous Gen. Either way, that's the answer and will need to install after I bed line the truck rather than having LineX have to pull the taillights.

Yeah I remember this from their OEM molded mud flap instructions. Most of it was straightforward but on one or two steps, it was easy to misinterpret the angle or what needed to be done.

I know that I'm going to have to do this, all well and good to get the bed extender to work. However, it's crap that I can't just remove them at will when I want w/o having to remove the damned tail light.... Not cool Ford, not cool.

whats weird is that i dont think mine came with a backing nut. nor did the directions call for tail light removal. soooo it went on the same way the one from my 2020 did. i used food grade anti seize and an impact and it threaded the bolt right on through. i have zero issues

Took mine off my 2020 Raptor trade-in and had to go buy nuts and washers to install. Drilled hole in tailgate cover where the dimple is and the drop in post doesn't line up unless you force it.
Ford Quality.
