Out of curiosity, I decided to replace and inspect my oil filter after the first 2,300 miles on the truck. I felt it was too early for a complete oil change, but I wanted to have a look to see how things were going. After opening it up, I was pleased to find only the expected sparkles from initial break in and no large metal shavings or chucks. The pleats of the filter element looked good also. I added half a quart of Motorcraft 5W30 to the engine to replace what came out and will inspect it again when I do a complete oil change at 5,000 miles.

I’d drain the factory fill and change the oil, I changed mine at 1,000 miles. There are a lot of fines that get suspended in the oil during break in that the filter won’t catch. My take is your first oil change is one of the most important.

Some years ago, I started cutting these filters open, bought a special tool for this. After awhile I concluded that if you had anything you could see visually, you had a real problem on your hands. Cutting it open for inspection was a waste of time unless you truly suspected something...
