Might be a crazy idea, a quick Google search did not yield what I had in mind. Imagine a wedge style RTT that would work as a tonneau cover. Granted this would have to be on a 6.5' bed. Did a quick measure and the budget wedge RTTs footprint is pretty close to the bed size. Add some gas struts to make the (closed) RTT open so you can get to the bulkhead. Or no floor to the RTT and you would have more headroom.

Will have to ponder this one further....

Cutting away the RTT floor may have negative effects upon the structural integrity of the RTT. Either way, you'd need something like rubber D-channel to provide a water/dust seal between the bed top and RTT.

Im a bit confused as to what you're looking to accomplish. You want a RTT that seals directly to the top of the bed rails? There are manufacturers that make truck caps that do exactly what you're looking for but I've never heard of a bed cover RTT. I think you'll find that much of the strength of a RTT structure is in the floor. Without it, the tent won't be able to hold it's own weight, let alone have something for the gas struts to attach to. Have you ever slept in a wedge tent? I suggest you try one first. It's not my favorite design.

Just get one of these and attach some tent fabric to the sides. :D Initially I was joking, but it actually might not be a bad idea.

I have one of those trucksport truck bed tents that is really cool. I used it before I bought my RTT. Sets up in 5 minutes and was huge on my 8 ft bed

You might be on to something. Imagine a wedge RTT on top of that.

Good point about compromising the structure. In terms of comfort it is an upgrade to my backpacking setup.

Honestly I'm surprised there aren't some inflatable bed tent things with some heavy duty stuff. They make huge inflatable 'boats'.

halfassed chinese attempt....

I was thinking something about the size of the one above, but more creative and walls that inflate as well. Like nice thick fillable structure elements, but also let the lighter duty walls inflate for quasi insulation and use a little AC unit or heater when the weather isn't fully cooperating.
