Just bought a gently used 2023 F150 XLT. Wheels are stock 265/70R17. I’d like black rims and slightly larger wheels and/or tires, so I’m debating if I should powder coat the rims black and upsize tires in the future (like a 285/70R17) or pay a little more now and get larger black rims and new tires. Current tires and rims are perfectly good condition.

Also a bit hesitant that if I powder coat these small wheels it will look like spare tires :D let me know your thoughts!

You cold plasti dip them for like 50 bucks to see if you like them black or what every color . or you could Hyper dip which has more of a Satin finish. Prep is key here. Watch dip your car wheels. This could be a low buck option till you find out which way you go. Custom offsets dot com has ton of wheel and tire combos picks on there gallery to give you ides. Wheels and tires are 1 of the best ways to transform you truck . Let the spending begin. Good luck.

Hubcaphaven is my go-to for this type of upgrade. Then, if not on HCH, then over to TireRack.

I've got mine powder coated in matte black with Tremor take-off Grabbers.

Funny because now for 2024, these wheels in gloss black look like the OEM Ford offering.

A decent powder with dismount & mount etc. and all the logistics will run you 75% of what a full new wheel and tire package deal will run you plus you’d have the option to go with a lighter weight wheel. Get what you can for the stockers towards the new set and it will be a wash cost wise.

I got mine done for $499 CAD. That included unmounting the old tires, powder coating, mounting new tires with TPMS and balancing. That’s roughly 20% or less of a new wheel/tire combo. Was way more cost efficient to go this route.

That's incredible pricing, I've had a few sets done and on average its $125+ for anything over 18" then another $200 for mount & balance then the time taken running wheels and tires around as most powder shops don't span into automotive/mechanical services.

My point was the cost for new tires is what it is, he's getting them anyhow. If regardless he's going to be in the $800 range for powder by the time all is said and done then $X for new tires, why not pick up a package deal (or catch a sale on new wheels) to offset. Net net he's in the same ballpark and will not have spent hours running wheels and tires around. Then he can sell the stockers to re-coup even more.

I'm all for powder but not exploring new options when considering having OEM wheels powdered is kind of silly these days. I paid less for 5 quality new wheels (shipped) then it would have cost me to have a great powder job done (no house powder on a batch run, prismatic powder etc.) on my stock 20" wheels.

My stockers are now for sale, ironically for the same price. I saved nearly 40lbs of unsprung weight given the OEM wheels are so heavy as a bonus. EOD not everybody can get a great powder job done for $499 CAD but anybody can catch a great deal on a new set.

Powder coating isn't as durable as expected; the rims could look crappy in a few years. A set or two of tires later and the coating chips along the bead during install and makes for leaky wheels.
