Last day of camping over Memorial Day Weekend, I woke up to a cold morning. Decided to drive the truck in to town to grab a coffee.

The truck starts, idles really rough, then check engine light comes on. I get errors around engine misfire and another like this.

I connect our trailer and make the 300 mile drive home. I take the truck to the dealership. They perform diagnosis and fund some little footprints.

Technician start getting suspicious and look around eventually finding the problem.

It could be a lot worse, looks to be about $1600 so far, mostly labor. I am going through auto insurance. Let's see what happens.

Is this a problem with previous gen. F-150s? I know Honda had trouble with their soy based wire insulation in the past and had to develop special wire wrap.

Nothing very ‘Ecological’ about having to spend thousands of dollars to have a tech drive to work, replace chewed wires, have those wires shipped across the country and all the associated paperwork/labor up the supply chain.

There’s already several reports here of chewed wires and engine covers.

Were you using generator mode through the night? I am curious if the engine turning on every 20 minutes would deter rodents or if the warmth of the engine would attract them despite the noise.

All new vehicles are using this soy based wiring. I can't remember the name of the product but there's a device that you can put in the engine bay that makes a high pitched sound which deters rodents. Might be worth the money to get something like that.

Those ultrasonic rodent repellents don’t do squat other than put money in the manufacturer’s pocket and drain your battery:



Bottom line is that rodents JDGAF when they have access to food.

The best thing is peppermint. It keeps mice out.
I had mice making a nest on my cab filter in my 2019 ranger.

Replaced with new filter, sprayed with peppermint. Havent been back.

Just try to determine what critter is the offender, research natural deterants. Buy thr oil/essense. Spray away.

Save and lasts a long time.

If you were out in the woods camping was it a tree rat? (squirrel) Or possibly a chipmunk?

I see chipmunks running around and crawling on my tires of my old bronco and it makes me cringe. Figure it's just a matter of time.
