I was looking at the engine specs on the 2022 F150 5.0 and then looked at the 2023 5.0 on the site and it doesn’t mention anything about the variable cylinder management on the 2023s. Anybody notice this?

My 2023 built in November has it, at low speeds where it’s really quiet cruising along like 35 MPH you can catch on when it’s activated if you have a good ear. Also note highway EPA ratings have not dropped, if Ford dropped the VDE the 4x2 5.0 wouldn’t still be rated at 24 MPG highway. I also noticed Ford took it off the description before I purchased lol, it’s just a misprint or honest omission of information. Personally I dig it, it’s a fire breathing V8 when you hammer down and an efficient V4 when you’re just cruising along. This OHC VDE system has been in use on other Ford engines in various markets and has been very reliable thus far, I wouldn’t get too caught up in comparing it to GM or Ram if that’s a concern. Totally different (better) execution on the 5.0L.

Ford site needs some work, if you do any deep digging on trim packages you’ll find out they are missing a lot of information and some is flat out incorrect. Take a look at the STX package and STX BAP package. Totally missing a lot on those. No mention of the heated mirrors for mine but guess what? It has them. Lots of little stuff. Headlights are also called out as chrome halogen and not black bezels for STX (also incorrect).

It was not noted since it's implementation on the 14th gen.....my sales staff insisted the Coyote didn't have it when I was on the lot looking, which isn't a surprise, but they started using it quietly that's for sure.

It's not something they went out of the way to advertise but it hasn't been a secret either. I still wonder if the sales staff was that clueless or if they were trying to sell me the V8 instead of teh 3.5

My dealer has no idea that the 5.0 had cylinder deactivation.

I've had it for a couple years and I can't tell when it's on or off. I only remember I have it when I read it in this forum... lol

That's why I went Ecoboost. I had the AFM system in a GMC and didn't like it. I'd rather run on 6 all the time than 8 only part of the time.

VDE in the 5.0 is not similar to AFM in the GM pushrod engines. Roller follower with solenoid driven hydraulic spring pin vs collapsible lifters on the GM. On the 5.0 system (also used on the I-3 engine) issues are unheard of. The system is disabled with Sport Mode and Tow/Haul mode and also is smart enough to disable itself if problems occur (in which case the spring pin plunges back into the activated position).
