Truck did great straight up the mountain, about 12km between first and fourth, depending on the speed. 5 hours got me a load of standing dead fir and pine. It's a stupid amount of work without a winch or help but I like doing it. Loading up, it squatted maybe two inches or so with 20 PSI in the air bags. But this probably around 1000 lbs of weight, give or take.

It really is. You go up there and there's this silence. You don't get it anywhere else but 10km + away. I rarely encounter another person. Today's yield was significantly better, probably 1/2 cord 😁

Nice! Definitely something I hope to do someday (the places where wood is accessible is owned by timber companies and I’m not keen to get caught by them…)

Also need to rig up something for my rack that will protect the window.

Hey fellow BC'er! It's all spoken for over there? Ususally there's at least a few spots along a service road that are de-activated or still belong to crown. Have you checked out the zone maps?

Oh I haven’t, thanks for the link! I’m just thinking of road up to Mt Washington has been recently cleared and lots of refuse there but almost too visible from the road. And surely gated for the weekend.

I can get a trailer so maybe that’ll be my project this summer!

Nice, with a sizeable utility trailer you could get a full cord at one time. I'd try to find a zone that's free to access 24/7/365 though. Anything that's gated will be privately controlled. What I did was screenshot the provincial website map, screenshot google satellite map, then overlay the two in photoshop. I paint brushed outlines of areas where I can't get wood from, then took this map out with me. Along with my phone for GPS it was accurate.

Firewood permits
Alberta does the same thing. You can get a permit to cut down trees for firewood.
Just have to specify the area and time frame so you can get the permit.

I checked out the site and maps; looks like they’re all about 3+ hrs away. Not horribly out of reach but definitely a full day.

Do you find there’s enough quality wood always available? Are the trees already cut down or are you felling them yourself? (which I’m not opposed to; kinda look forward to getting a chainsaw, lol!) Or do you sometimes head to one site then have to keep going if it’s been picked over?

This is likely for spring planning, but I’d be keen to save a few $100 on wood next year, even if it means a couple day-trips (we go thru about 3 cords a winter, probably closer to 4 if it’s 100% softwood)

Thread title got me real confused. Truck's a 21 not a 24.
