I have 2021 lariat without wireless charger, I’ve noticed very quick drain on my I phone battery and my phone getting very hot on 2-3 hour drive. I’ve heard others complain of this issue.
What makes a phone heat up is power draw.

3 areas contribute to power draw:

1. Display on and brightness of display
2. Processor usage (doing a lot of stuff, especially like video processing)
3. The radios.

There are 4 radios in the phone:
a. Bluetooth
b. GPS
c. WiFi
d. Cellular

Notes:
- All are Tx and RX, except GPS.
- For GPS, when using for Navigation it is on all the time, much higher power usage, when not Navigating it powers up periodically to establish location
- The further away a radio is from where it's connecting the higher power it applies to get the connection (not an issue in this situation for BT and WiFi as they are in the truck, but Cell radio will ramp up signal amplification to establish and hold a good connection)

If you are using CarPlay you are using BlueTooth, WiFi and Cellular. You may be using GPS. If you also are keeping your phone display on (not going to black screen). And if you are in a low cell reception area. Then you are pulling a lot of power out of the battery. So decreased battery time and increased temperature.

My phone doesn't get any warmer than it does on my home wireless charger. But.... I only use it to charge the phone when it's not running anything. I don't use android auto or stream music in the truck.

SSM 50045 - 2018-2021 Various Ford and Lincoln Vehicles - Wireless Charging Pad Inoperative/ Slow Charging - iPhone 12 Users

Some 2018-2021 Ford/Lincoln vehicles equipped with a wireless charging pad may exhibit an inoperative charging pad, slow charging, a notification that the phone has been mispositioned on the charging pad and/or the phone charging icon in the center screen is not showing. This may be due to the customer's phone if they are using an iPhone 12. Vehicles equipped with a wireless charging pad are designed to charge best with phones that follow the Qi standard. The iPhone 12 hardware currently does not follow the Qi standard for wireless charging. This may make it difficult for Ford and Lincoln vehicles to wirelessly charge this specific phone. The phone can still be charged using the USB cable if the vehicle experiences the above symptoms. If the customer is using an iPhone 12, verify the wireless charging pad works with a Qi certified phone prior to any part replacements.

In reality that is Ford BS and CYA.

I've used dozens of Qi chargers on my iPhones starting before MagSafe models and with MagSafe models. They have all worked. Including cheap, no name Chinese knock-offs for less than $15!

The only issues with iPhones and other "non-Apple certified" type chargers is how fast a charge.

Before MagSafe Apple highest charge power was 7.5Watts. Many "other" chargers just supported 5W. MagSafe is capable up to 15Watts. But many "other" chargers may still only support 5W or 7.5W charging rate.

But they all work.

I'm not saying Ford can fix this with whatever their design currently is in the F150, but it's a b*s* excuse they are hiding behind.

The issue isn't the cheapo charger, it's what you do while charging. I have the same experience as others, if I use the wireless charger but my phone isn't connected to the truck doing anything, it charges as fast as a small wattage wireless charger will charge and doesn't get anymore hot that the next wireless charger, but if you are connected to Android Auto or Apple Car play, your phone is working hard, constantly transmitting all that data to the truck and using near all it's radios, while getting a minimal amount of charge.

When I use android auto and the wireless charger, my phones charge doesn't go up or down, the charger has just enough juice to keep everything running but no more, so the phone never gains any charge, and she gets pretty hot, which is normal.

All wireless chargers in cars are low wattage like this, they put in cheap chargers because they are cheap.
