Ford accessories tailgate cover problem

Any ideas what to do here? My dealer was adamant Ford does not provide fasteners for the tailgate cover and you are to use to ones in the metal panel on tailgate. Problem is there was only 6 screws on my truck from the factory and there are 8 holes on the cover. Bigger washers? They pop right through, almost lost it in the highway today. Pretty crappy setup for an OEM supplied cover imo.

Anyone know a part # for these screws? If I can buy two more online and just get bigger washers at Home Depot it should fix it.

I'd have to more closely, but I swear mine look different than that. In fact my screws are "black" I think not shiny silver like yours. I was looking at removing my bed liner for a bed rug. I have to have the rug first though because the bed liner scratched the heck out of the bed already.

Pretty sure this is the part number you're looking for.

Tail gate bolt

Get some wider stainless washers (no rust) for the cover plate. If the factory bolts are not long enough to fit wider washers then pull a bolt out to get the right thread pitch and go to a real hardware store not Home Depot and take a look in their bolt drawers for longer round headed torx bolts and wider washers. You might get lucky at Home Depot but chances are they won't have what you're looking for.

In combination with the wider washers, you can also use some 3M double sided automotive tape along the edges where the cover is against the tailgate to keep it secured to the truck.

Negative, pulled them out by hand after they popped through the cover. I think the dealer was just lying to me because they didn’t have the pack of the correct screws and washers. My dads F-250 has black ones with fat washers that Ford supplied. I don’t think there is any way Ford is sending these accessories out with no way to fasten them.

Speaking of fasteners, I wonder if there should have been spacer pucks, between the cover and tailgate.

Some stress caused that shear. ???

The last one I purchased came with new hardware. Remove the eight screws and replace with deep concave washers with a lip to hold it tight. From what I remember the screw bag did have a part number and directions on it so you can probably order them. Here is a youtube video that may help a bit.

truthfully, i would just go to a Fastenal near you. Found out your thread pattern and just get replacement screws/washers. they should have a huge assortment. worst case is try a hardware store or HD/Lowes
i mean, you probably just need bigger washers but as the other guy said, i'd look for some black hardware over the shiny stuff.

yeah, the guy with pics above me is exactly what you're missing. the insert holds the cover down but the screw is recessed.

As others have said, it should have came with new hardware. Google doesn't return much on these numbers. I would have dealer order it again and return the other. Search for P/N: ML3Z9900038C on parts.ford.com and it doesn't show a separate number for the hardware. The picture on the Ford Accessories page shows the hardware also: Ford Accessories.

Unfortunately this wasn’t the dealer that sold me the truck so no dice, they weren’t very happy I brought in a new truck that I purchased from a different dealer for a bedliner package (understandable). So I’m just going to let this one go, it’s fixed now and in their eyes I’m in the wrong for going there for a low profit item wasting their time. Some businesses are like that, my dad was always the opposite of that with his HVAC business always willing to help..but a lot of small businesses these days have become total money wh*res and can’t spare a second of time if it’s not for maximum profit.

Well treating you like they don't need you is a great way to keep avoiding them. If someone treats you like they don't want your business, by all means, oblige them.
