My brother pointed out that there was something hanging from under the engine, today. Turns out it's the under tray. I haven't seen anyone else post about it yet, but if you have one, check it out.

Truck is a '21 PowerBoost Lariat.

Those trays are garbage. I’m putting RCI skid plates underneath.

The RCI claims I need to remove my active aero-dam and I don't wanna.

Did you recently have your oil changed? If so, maybe whoever changed it didn’t properly secure it.

Vaguely recently. I have 84% life left. The bolt was securely fastened in the frame. It just tore.

I noticed you're located in Michigan. Is it possible you drove/backed over a pile of solid snow and ripped it off?

On RCI's website it says you don't have to remove the air dam on 2021 trucks.
https://rcimetalworks.com/https:/rcimetalworks.com/2015-2022-f-150-engine-skid-plate/
It says this under key features.
Huh, ok.

Thanks for this. The Stage3 website says it DOES require.

This thread has caught my attention because I have been considering installing the aluminum version of these skid plates when I plan to level my truck. I found this link which is to another forum where these plates were being discussed for another reason but they have pics of them installed on a 2021 truck with the air dam clearly installed. Check it out.

I have that same POS material under my Lariat. I'm disappointed Ford didn't make it out of hard plastic like some floor mats. C'mon - I bought my truck, paid over $70k for it (I know some Gen14 owners paid a lot more than me) and darn it, we deserve better. Maybe we'll luck out and Ford will issue a TSB on this and provide us with something better. If not, I'll be buying the stuff from RCI. I'm sorry for the rant and thank you for the info..

Are these things under all of our trucks? My current truck and each before that never had anything like this. I vaguely recall asking the dealer about it in 2018 and he called it a diaper I think and said they just got rid of them after the first oil change. Probably why my 2018 left a blackspot on the garage floor from a weep hole in the exhaust or something.

Edit: I stand corrected. My current truck does have this. I am certain my 2018 did not. Now my memory is not as certain about the 2020...

Update:

I just got it back from the dealer and they replaced it. The dealer implied that it could have been their fault from not completely removing it when they did the oil change. They said they have removed three of the four bolts and just let it hang during the change. And since it's a cheap POS it didn't take long before it failed since it's not supposed to bend like that.

So the dealership covered the cost of replacing it. If it fails again I'm just going to buy the skid plate mentioned above.

FWIW this has been an issue since the 12th gen trucks (~09+). I'd say about 1/3 F-150s you see here on the road has that part hanging down dragging on the ground; pretty embarrassing. It was ripped off of my dad's 2014 and my sister's 2017, and only a matter of time before it falls off of our 21's. When it does I'll look into replacing with an aluminum skid... just wish someone would come out with a trans-skid for the powerboost already.

Note that the website states for 2015 - 2020 trucks:

15-20 F-150 Model trucks may require removal of the air dam for installation. This air dam should be re-attachable post install.

The air dam is removed for installation, but can be re-attached after the skid plate is installed.

Here is my thread on getting the Powerboost transmission skid plate. https://www.f150gen14.com/forum/threads/pb-aluminum-transmission-skid-plate.8140/#post-156559
