From Hemmings Muscle Machines magazine June 2022 issue pg 56: Asked "Ask Ray" OK to use which motor oil is recommended for the F150 Motorcraft or similar oils like Mobil 1? Answer: Although Ray uses Mobil 1 for his 2014 F150 he replied to use Motorcraft for a new one because other brands "may not contain all the additives the engine wants." Here is the kicker I never thought to ask my dealership "Don't assume the dealer is using the manufacturer's oil, many do not, for cost considerations."

My receipts from the dealership call out Motorcraft parts and part numbers. Although I have no evidence that's what they actually put in, seems like they would be in deep shit if they were using a no name brand and documentation says otherwise.

The part number/spec for the oil for the 21+ ecoboost 2.7/3.5 is WSS-M2C961-A1 (5W30)
This oil has a different additive package then the older version. It's not just motorcraft oil, it's the right spec that is called for.

I bet there is no legal requirement for Ford dealerships to use Motorcraft brand oil when doing an oil change. There may be a requirement Ford put on their dealerships. Just like there is no legal requirement for Shell to sell you Shell branded gasoline.

I love oil threads.

So the 3.5 Ecoboost, 2.7 Ecoboost, 5.0 Coyote, and 3.x Normally Aspirated motor are all very different motors but all call for the same oil?

Just curious.

Last time I tried buying the Motorcraft F-150 Diesel motor oil from ford, they did not even have any. You are probably not getting a motorcraft oil filter either because those are also on backorder.

Back when I worked for dealerships it was always Valvoline from the local bulk supplier.

No, the 3.3 uses a 5w20 oil, spec is WSS-M2C960-A1

Last time I took my truck to my local dealer's quick lube I watched them put in Motorcraft synthetic blend from the quarts. The dealer by me has a waiting room with large windows where you can watch them work on your vehicle.

Is there something special about the Motorcraft engine oil?? I wasn’t even thinking about using it when my trucks arrives. Mobil 1 has been my go to oil for years and the plan is to stick with it.

For what's it worth, Ford recommends Motorcraft synthetic blend 5W30.

Ahhh, so the 3.3 uses the same oil Ford recommended for the 3.5 Ecoboost in 2011, only to shortly thereafter say "oops, maybe we meant 5W30"

My snarky :) point originally was to imply that if the 3 motors that all are recommended to use the same exact Ford part#, then that in and of itself implies that there's not a lot that differentiates Motorcraft 5W30 from other 5W30's.

Don't get me wrong, it's good oil. But it can't be that specific for the 3.5 Ecoboost. And the 2.7. And the Coyote.
