Attached pic of dash showing 29.5 indicated mpg. Actual measured later in trip was 27.8. Not particularly accurate but it begs the question how is it calculated? Any feedback on this?
Thanks

Fuel usage rate is calculated in real time, there are SAE PID for that. Then throw in distance. Old school methods of calculating MPG don't work on modern fuel tanks but it is okay for an estimate.

My PB said 23.1 for the trip (tank). Hand calculated was 24.2. That was on whatever the dealer put in it out of the box. Cold weather. I filled with 87 and will be keeping a log on my cell phone.

If you go into engineering mode there is a way to edit the constant that calculates the mpg and adjust it much closer to actual. I adjusted mine about 6 months back and am never more than ~0.5 mpg off actual vs. what the truck calculates.

See this thread for details:

How are you getting your average? Flat roads, slow driving? I go up and down a hill everyday and averaging about 21.5. I’d honestly expect more. Had a hybrid rav4 before and was averaging 43 mpg the same route. above epa.

I would say I’m “hyper-miling”, which will end once I feel comfortably broken in. Easy on the brakes, easy on the accelerator. Conservation of energy. I haven’t read it anywhere but as my brain understands it, the only advantage to hybrid is regenerative braking. Any engine energy used to charge the battery isn’t being put to the wheels, rather released later. If you’re driving in a way that charges the battery beyond what it wants, you’ve maxed out it’s potential efficiency. I’m sure each truck will have its own MPG, much like a fingerprint.

Yeah I’m hyper miling as much as I can. Being soft when I can on the gas and break pedals. About 4,200 miles on the truck.

Also, if your talking about a big enough hill, your battery may be fully charged half way down. After that point, you’re hybrid gains you nothing. But further to your question, I’m mixed driving; highway, grid lock, back roads, hills, pretty much everything equally mixed. I can tell you if your drive is less than ~10 miles, and your truck is just getting warmed up in the cold weather, your economy will suck.

Yeah my hand calc is vety close to display. Lifetime is 23.5mpg, but I've hit 27 mixed many times on trips. My record was 30.2 over 150 miles roughly; mostly highway with some traffic both ways.

The present 22 4WD with the 2.7EB payload package with 3.73 gearing when checked against hand calculation is always to the good. Here using a multiplier of .96 on the Truck MPG reading brings the total with in .05 of the hand calculated numbers.

29.5 mpg X 0.96 = 28.32 mpg

Still very good.

On the present XLT 302a went into gauge settings and replaced the X mission temp with the turbo gauge. One would be surprised how after watching the turbo gauge awhile how one can increase fuel mileage with just a slight change in driving.

100% this, boost uses up fuel much quicker.

However, I can drive mostly city stop and go in sport mode racing between lights or normal mode and I am happy to get consistent 20 MPG. I don't often see boost being used even in moderate acceleration leading the pack away from stops.

Mine was reading between 24-25 on the factory wheels without touching the AFE bias. Over a half dozen hand calculations, I found it to be 1-1.5mpg too generous. I changed the bias from 1000 to 0945 and it seems to correct it. The level didnt seem to change MPG's at all, but I was double wammied when I installed my new wheelset (triple wammied if you consider a lot more remote start time). Went up to raptor "35's" and winter fuel hit at nearly the same time. Im down to somewhere between 18 and 20 (estimated by percentage due to speedo being off for tire size), but will keep an eye on it when summer fuel comes back around.
