After MUCH research and options-analysis, I decided to go with the Softopper soft canopy topper. My wife is still a bit concerned with security but I think the vast majority of our life with the topper on will be in low crime/low risk areas.

I ordered direct; I couldn’t find anywhere else to order. Living in Canada, I had to pay about $130 duty; delivery was quite fast otherwise. Everything Arrived in good shape and installation was overall not too bad.

I had watched the videos and read instructions numerous times and STILL messed up some steps. I also found the snaps quite hard To get on: one side wasn’t too bad but doing the 2nd side, I had to start at the back and move forward (they recommend the opposite and doing both ends before the middle). I also figured out the fwd end of the rails need to align with the back edge of the forward bulkhead if the bed.Any further forward and the front of the topper hits thebed camera. The rails also bowed a bit when it’s allput up- I think maybe I have the clamps too far from the edges.

Anyway, seems to work well. Easy to fold up, I can still load my bikes (I folded it up with the bike on, but it can all closeup with the bike tailgate pad still installed). Just filled the bed with renovation debris- nice that I’m not worrying about debris spraying everywhere, tarps, etc!

Next step: install the Adarac and confirm it’s compatible. Fingers crossed!

Nice! How much wind do you think gets in there at highway speeds? I’m thinking about one of these myself.

Hard to say. It’s been out in some light rain and I didn’t notice any water coming in. The front has some small gaps down in the corners where the front flap velcros to the sides. No noise that I notice and when driving, I’m not noticing anything really flapping.

Thanks! I hadn’t thought about rain (my mind was stuck on dust), but it probably is about as equally effective for both situations.

We had one of those on my companies work truck… it kept everything dry and easy to take down if needed more space , if you security this is not the topper for you.

Yeah I debated myself a lot about security. Where I live, where I think we’ll be going… I figured the odds were pretty low, we could think of ways to mitigate maybe, and the overall pro’s (including price: about 1/3 the cost of a fibreglass one!) outweighed the cons.

Weight, and the ability to remove and store it, were the biggest factors for me when thinking about caps.

I had one on an old Tacoma and they are amazing. Held up well in anything from 50 MPH cross winds to torrential downpours on I80 heading west. Mine always kept the bed 95% water/dust free. Just remember to put the seam sealer on the upper seams and you should be good.

Really Interested in how this works out for you, this is the combination that really want to do if they are compatible. Haven't gotten around to ordering the softopper yet though.

Please keep us updated on how this works out for you over the miles. Guess I would miss the rearward visibility.
Loss of the high mounted stop light might be an issue Thats something Ford could embed into say an enlarged tailgate handle.

You would still have the tailgate camera, right?

I have a decked system for work in mine, with the tonneau still on it from when i bought the truck, which doesnt leave much space for anything but golf clubs. I have been doing alot of reading about these soft tops. Do you have any photos yet of it stowed? Are the rails similar to bed covers that just clamp?

Thanks!

Canada is about the only place I would find that useful. I hiked out to a jetty on a warm sunny afternoon in NS and in sure Atlantic fashion, a torrential downpour came from nowhere. I had left my motorcycle helmet hanging from the handlebars and my jacket opened and airing out on the tank. When I got back to the bike, the jacket was folded up keeping the seat dry and the helmet was perched right side up on the back rest!

I just saw a Superduty with the aluminum driver’s side door peeled open like a sardine can to access the locking mechanism.

Beyond the security issues, UV damage would be an issue here in the Southwest.

In addition to a chain or cable lock, they also make wire mesh nets and bags for touring cyclists and backpackers.

I had no idea that that existed, so thanks for passing it on. It costs a heck of a lot, but I can see some real advantages of the more rigid design.

I was harsh when I said blow up. Because it is pretty neat but just over my budget
