Variable Displacement Engine - How does it work?

I'm looking for information on how Ford's VDE deactivates the valves in the 5.0L F150? The only Ford VDE information I've found is for a 1.5L Ecoboost 3 cylinder engine. It looks like they use oil pressure to somehow deactivate the valves. Thanks

It's been a bit of a mystery to me, all i know is that it's very hard to tell when it's activated. Sometimes I think i can hear it because the exhaust goes funky, but I could be hearing stuff.
