I haven’t found that eco mode helps but I have a leveling kit and 34” tires, 4x4. Sport mode shaves about 2-3 MPEG’s. I think it has a lot with how you drive. Owner since March 2022.

Ya mine is getting an Eibach level and 33's on days off so I don't expect it to be good. But that's not why I drive trucks. Even right now the mileage is pretty mediocre but it's still very low miles.

For everyday driving is there anything you can do to improve MPG on the 5.0 V8? Is it better to have it tuned or modify the air intake? Someone was even telling me the cat back system even helps but is that worth the money?
Yes. Do not lift it or put larger tires on it.

Mine just broke 2000 miles. Even with the break in period and winter gas, I can see 20-22 if I'm easy on it. I do mostly short trips with some longer drives tossed in. The shorter, city type driving definitely kills MPGs. I have a 1.5" level and stock sized Toyo Open Countrys. A few roads around me are around 45-50MPH zones and I can see 22+ easy on those roads. I use mostly eco and normal modes. Sport every once in a while just to have fun. I wasn't expecting seeing +-20 this early on. My last 2.7EB I averaged 21MPG lifetime with 28k miles. So I'll take it, especially when that Coyote comes to life. Hard to beat that sound!

I think that Eco mode just changes the shift points as well as the throttle sensitivity.

So it helps you get better MPGs but won’t if you don’t do your part.

I actually prefer the throttle feel in Eco to normal mode even if I feel like goosing it every now and then.

The 10 speed almost shifts the same as I would if it were a manual transmission, only I would probably short shift even more and I wish it would freewheel down to a lower speed when I’m coasting to red lights.

The EPA fuel economy numbers may be off as the testing is done indoors, but they do indicate relative fuel efficiency between engines. With the F-150 4WD trucks the city mpg for the 3.5L is 18 mpg for the 5L V-8 it is 16 mpg, so a gain of about 12% with the V-6 engine. Not that surprising as more cylinders result in more pumping losses and less energy to move the truck forward.

Another factor is E85 where EPA numbers for the V-8 is 11 mpg city. Definitely good to avoid E85 at the pumps.

I bought my Ecoboost truck in May of this year and for the first 1000 miles it averaged 16.5 mpg. Now it is averaging 20 mpg with careful driving. If I am traveling less than 30 miles to some place or returning home I keep my speed below 72 mph and if the slow lane is open I will drive at 65 mph.

For a 30 miles trip distance at 80 mph it will take me 22.5 minutes, at 72 mph it will take 25 minutes, and at 65 mph it will take 28 minutes. It never makes a difference overall to save 2.5 to 5.5 minutes in travel time. Just as easy to leave the house 5 minutes earlier.

At 80 mph the fuel economy drops by 20 percent and being in California I already pay 80% more for gas than those in other states as their are only two oil companies and they are allowed to take advantage of their monopoly in this state.

City driving....almost any modern V8 truck will get crap gas mileage. Mine gets 11-12'ish on E85 city driving and probably 3-4mpg better on 91...which is on par or a smidge better than the Cheby 5.3 Sierra I owned.
Well, a 5.0 with 3.73s will do much better in the city than with 3.31s as long as you can keep your foot out of it. Thats where the eco mode does well. On the freeway, cruising 70+, eco mode won’t do squat except make your truck feel sluggish and unresponsive when you gotta pass or merge.
In my 2012 steel body tank, my Ecoboost will be lucky to get 14 in the city and 19 on the hwy (70+).

Yep that’s good point. The only scenario where 80 is better than 70 is over a long road trip. If I’m driving 10 hours, that‘s 800 miles vs 700 miles, a whole ’nother hour and a half. Of course I don’t cruise above 75 in my current truck, but in the minivan I’ll go 80. But I’m almost convinced that the 5.0L is more efficient at 80 than either of the Ecoboosts, especially if it has the 3.31 rear end. With a LEER or ARE topper, 36 gallon tank, and 4wd, it would be the ultimate, all-weather, highway cruiser for my needs.

I'm currently getting 17.2mpg w / 3:31.
Lowered, winter tires and winter gas.
Mixed driving, more city than highway.
Pedal commander and exhaust so I'm not easy in the pedal. It's decent mileage and will be better when gas is switched over.

I have often passed a semi on the highway and then stopped for gas/diesel and gotten back on the highway and after 10 minutes found myself behind the same semi. I gained little when factoring the time spent for the additional fuel stops.

What was the time span between passing the truck and stopping for gas? Cuz if you stopped for gas 10 minutes after passing the truck than it was probably only a mile or two behind when you exited the freeway….

I’m on 285/75R17 toyos (34s) and leveled. Easily getting 20mpg and last long highway drive saw 23mpg. The biggest thing I see is keep a constant speed and don’t go 10mph over everywhere you go.

I'm all stock with 5.0L 4x4 SCREW and 20" sport wheels, 3.73 rearend I'm at 32K miles now. All time mpg average- 32K mile MPG at 19.2 on my Trip 1 that has not been reset since the one mile when purchased. I reset trip two on every fill up. I run regular fuel and I drive in normal mode at all times. I am 25/75 city highway driving to/from work. I get 20.4 MPG. On road trips majority highway at 73MPH cruise set 22.4 MPG. When I am off for a week and all city driving I get 18 to 19 MPG depends on traffic.
