On a recent trip from San Diego to Death Valley I received multiple "Service Engine Soon" notices.
DTCs included
P084B-00 Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor
P0A2F-94 Hybrid Drive Motor Overtemp
I observed the Service Engine messages before, during and after the grades. During the trip I observed a max coolant temp of 230F, transitory and consistent with the 7,000lb load on up to 9% grade at speeds of 50-60 mph.
In addition, when I exited freeway near home on return trip, "Coolant Overtemp" message displayed on instrument cluster. OBD app indicated coolant temp was 205 F for 20+ miles on flat roads. I had observed this once previously in October at the same intersection while towing.
After 15 DAYS in the shop, the final action decided upon was to reprogram the PCM as directed in TSB 23-2429.
At one point, they said they were going to use a borescope to look for potential coolant intrusion into the cylinders (apparently in a couple of other vehicles this was noted). After multiple consultations with Ford Engineering, they concluded it was likely software.
Service Advisor noted "we're a bunch of mechanical people and we were looking for mechanical reasons" as cause of delay (READ: We have a hammer so our problems must be related to nails).
Given the 3 items, I figured corrupt SW or malfunctioning sensors, as I'd not lost any coolant during or before the trip. Further, it's not clear it was ever 'scoped as it was not noted in the record I received.
I cannot find this particular TSB online.
I have a history of coolant overtemp alarms (heat exchanger leaks), and have observed coolant as high as 241F (and transmission temp of 251F) associated with another trip back in August (Geyserville, CA) in which I stopped to let engine and tranny cool down before finishing the climb).
I will be taking another trip soon to see if the updated PCM SW takes care of this. Yet another reason to go camping...
