So Ford sent me the Ford Protect letter, but interestingly no price is listed. It only says 0% finance….I am not financing an extended warranty coverage but I may pay cash if it’s worth it. I put on 20,000 miles or more per year, so I may be interested as I plan to keep this truck to right around 200k miles. That’s where I ditched my Expedition EL. Can anyone save me some time here lol, what is the flat out cost of this extended care coverage from Ford? Not a dealer thing, appears to be from corporate.
I recently got the ford protect ultimate or whatever the 100% coverage level is called, as I was approaching 30K on the ODO and I have had a couple thousand dollars worth of mishaps up until this point owning the truck so I wanted to at least look at pricing. It has a pricing calculator built in to the fordpass app if you go to settings and view the section about warranty coverage. It allows you to change parameters like average annual mileage and how many miles you are looking to be covered for. I did a package for like $2,200 that will cover me until I reach 60K miles on the ODO. So basically it's another chunk of coverage identical to the factory ford warranty, with all the same roadside/rental/full OEM treatment etc. Within the past year or so, I have had a $1,200 powertrain control module (PCM) replacement, and a $3,000 whole headlight housing replacement because of a failed DRL LED chip. So at this rate, the additional warranty I bought will pay for itself half way through the coverage period. Also my repair prices did not include the flatbed towing service, and rental cars- so I assume that is another $500 plus the $4,200 on parts/labor alone. For payment, they offer 0% 6month/12month financing for the price of the warranty, which you can select for using the calculator tool on ford's website, and the prices are identical if you pay outright as compared. to financing. I did zero research into third party warranties, but all I know is that this machine is Ford's baby, even though they let me hold the steering wheel. When it comes to replacing computer modules or even mechanical stuff, I am happy knowing that the boys in blue will be taking care of it.

Wow, you paid quite a bit. Had you just borrowed any address out of FL, you could have gotten a 100k/7yr with all options for that price -- 6 mo interest free financing through paypal as well.

Jumping to $100 deductible would look like this -- and you can wait and 'stack' your issues for the warranty purposes. Each 'visit', not issue, = 1 deductible.

I am exceptionally suspicious of warranties, as it's a principal agent problem. Ford is incentivized to cause consumers to continue to buy warranties while spending as little as possible to do so. At some point, something on my truck will break. Do I prefer to a) spend more on maintenance and pay extra to get the job done right or b) pay upfront to an entity that is thereafter incentivized to do as little as possible? My HOPE is that I have this truck long enough that the engine or transmission dies, and at that point I'll either replace it with a new vehicle if the technology has advanced far enough/I need a Superduty or get the offending part rebuilt to a higher standard. I would love forged ceramic-coated pistons and ceramic coated exhaust manifolds or a performance rebuilt 10R80.....I'm pretty sure that the Ford warranty program won't cover that. Further, I'm eagerly awaiting 60k miles so that I can add the turbo blankets, the exhaust heat exchanger bypass, a full custom exhaust and a tune. None of those goals are compatible with a warranty program.

Interesting, $6,300 is about the cost of a 10R80, and about 60% of the cost of a new 3.5 Eco/5.0 V8 long block full engine. For that kind of cost I think I will just roll the dice. If I have to do an overhaul I’m only losing $3,000 over what I would have payed for the plan, but in the event I don’t I’m down $6,000 on the plan. I think I’ll pass. I very much appreciate the honesty! That’s exactly what I was looking for.
Buying insurance, of any kind, is no different than gambling at the casino. You are betting that you will need it and the company is betting that you will not need it. Same as the casino, the house often wins.
