While it is certainly easier to walk if you don't have anything signed and have not put down a deposit, it also does not bind the dealer to anything that you discussed. I want numbers in writing, signatures, and a deposit placed, so that I know that the deal is done and that my truck belongs to me when it comes to the lot.
There was a story recently of a guy who ordered an Audi RS6 in California. He agreed to pay MSRP and waited, I think, a year and a half for it to arrive. When he went to pick it up, the dealer gave him the option of paying an additional $20,000 for the car or getting his deposit back. Those cars are rare and dealers across the county are getting well over sticker, so the dealer didn't want to miss out on that profit!
