Picked up my new 2022 f150 and the dealer charged me an extra $150 for locking lug nuts! I told him I did'nt want them but he said its mandatory that he install them. Anyone else have this or is it this dealers scam to get extra money?

Probably is mandatory on his lot with crappy security. I'd demand the factory lugs and he could shove his locks. Either that or walk.

Not sure why you wouldnt want them???

Spend the $150 to potentially avoid having to spend thousands.

I had a customer I sold a truck to get his king ranch rims stolen 3 days after buying the truck..

OEM rims are NOT cheap.

Well worth the $150!!

Parts like rims and tires are in short supply right now. It's hard to drive a truck without rims and tires. And BTW... I HATE THIEVES!!

You can get a set for around $20, so you are getting ripped off (much like that flashing brake light addon the dealer charges $350 for a $5 relay).

Ford sells them for $55 list out of the parts department at your dealer. You can generally ask and get at least 10% discount. So $50. It probably cost him $25. You can also get them for $23 on Amazon (same manufacturer McGuard)

So yes, he ripped you off. Unless you truly are unable to remove/replace 4 lug nuts in total (1 per wheel). I estimate by hand, 90 seconds per wheel, total of 6 minutes, for a labor cost of $125 (that works out to $1250/hour). With a power tool, less.

I got a set from my dealer for about $50. I wasn't going to buy them but had some shady characters eyeballing my rims in the school parking lot, so bought a pair.

I bought some for my 2022, $45 dollars I think, and all 4 of them have rust after 4 months!!! Gonna look for another set that won’t rust.

You can decide if it is a rip off, but nothing from the dealer is mandatory. They may try, and on a truck off the lot I guess they might have that power, but not for a custom order - you didn't request it - they can take them off if you truly don't want them.

And it'll slow someone down maybe a minute total stealing your wheels. It's more for you to feel good and cause a PITA to anyone that pulls wheels off and puts them back on than actual security.

To OP, it's not mandatory, just a money grab by the dealer as everyone else said.

I actually had it written in purchase agreement that they would not install the lock nuts and they would remove the $140 fee at time of pickup. Sure enough when I went to pickup the truck they were on. Took them 5 minutes to remove. They did say it was standard that every vehicle thru their lot were to get the locks. I have broken too many keys on our Flex over the years. Lesson learned, keep that shit off my vehicles. I do have a fancy socket to remove them now, many of the neighbors have borrowed 😛.
