I live in an area (Calgary, AB) where they use a mixture of rock and sand on the roads in the winter and replacing a windshield every year is almost to be expected. It very frequently starts from a very small chip that spreads sue to a rapid temperature change or even moisture. It is so frequent that the majority of vehicles actually have cracked glass and the police pretty much ignore it unless it is so bad you can't see out of the window. I have had a cracked windshield on every car I have owned here after growing up on the west coast of Canada where getting a chip or crack was unheard of. Nothing to do with the quality of the glass, and everything to do with where the rock hits it. Any small chips around the edge of the glass almost always turn into a crack as there is a lot of tension in the curved area of the windshield. Regular insurance won't even cover it here, you have to buy a windshield specific policy.
Same here. One note - if you can catch the nick/chip before it starts spreading they can usually do a fill on it that will prevent it from growing. That being said, if there are significant temperature swings your window to fix it is very small.

We get crazy temp swings here from -25c to +15c in a matter of hours in the winter when the warm weather comes in over the mountains. There is nothing worse than driving down the road and watching the crack work its way across the whole windshield as you drive 🤣.

Yep. Or watching it suddenly appear and grow when you turn on the defroster in the morning. :p

FYI
The states where drivers can put zero-deductible glass repair on their auto insurance, policies are listed below:

  • Arizona
  • Connecticut
  • Florida
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Minnesota
  • New York
  • South Carolina
Florida statutes aren’t exactly the same as those in other states, but they’re relatively generous to drivers with damaged windshields. You’ll need to pick up comprehensive insurance coverage if you’d like to receive the benefits of windshield insurance at Florida repair shops.

If a rock can easily crack a windshield, I really question the durability of a Ford windshield. I never had this problem with other vehicles. That’s what make me so disappointed.
count yourself extremely lucky if you have not happen in 20 yrs of driving... i am lucky if i can make a year without replacing a windshield

Not yet 9 month on my 2023 Powerboost and I found a hairline crack on my windshield. Took it to my local dealer and the manager said it’s not covered by warranty, because of the nick the size of a deer tick. Is that really possible a nick the size of a deer tick can cause a hairline crack of about 2 ft? It’s the first time I ever had a hairline crack like this in my 20+ years of driving. Every passing month, I grow more and more dissatisfied with Ford, their products and services. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Normally crackec windshields are covered by your insurance with no deductible. Just beware of glass companies that sell and install "blemished" windshields. Some of these blemished windshields are sold at a discount due to the fact tghat they didnt pass oem quality inspections due to uneven surfaces{wavy} and slight delamination around edges.IMO it always good to request OEM replacement, especially on a newer vehicle

I ended up replacing it with an aftermarket windshield, because the price difference is $400. I got it replaced for $500 because I didn't have insurance. Hope I'm not going to regret this.

hopefully it'll work out for you. Ive had two aftermarkets in the past 10 years and they had a wavy place in them causing the windshield wipers wouldnt make contact on a couple of places. Good luck youll be ok

I also had a relatively small nick on my windshield from a stone that got kicked up by a vehicle in front of me. It left a star shaped crack about 1 inch across in a place that didn't interfere with my view so I didn't get too worried about it.

A few days ago it was cold here so I turned on my windshield defroster to warm up the truck and about 30 minutes later the star had grown right across my windshield left to right and top to bottom.

I made arrangement with Safelite to get it replaced and started a claim with Geico. In Florida windshields are replaced without a deductible. Because I read on here about the Ford acoustic windshield, when I got to Safelite this morning I made sure that was what they had for me. No. They were very nice about it but they told me to contact Geico about it. I did that and they firmly told me that they would pay for a reasonable and customary replacement, not an acoustic windshield. I have to pay for what they consider an upgrade, even though that's what was on my truck.

Bottom line: $330.42 plus tax. I will pay it but I don't think it's fair.

I just wanted to let others know what to expect.

Make sure that you have an insurance rider (if available) covering oem parts. Otherwise pay out of pocket for the replacement glass. Been there, done that and learned from it.

I’ve got a crack on the windshield of my 23 with just over 5k miles on it. Found it when I went out to my truck over the winter after I started my truck on a -30 degree day. I didn’t see a chip in the windshield and it was nice today so I took a ballpoint pen and traced it from passenger side to driver side and up towards the roof and didn’t feel anything. Any chance this is a manufacturing issue I could get warrantied?
