Unless the engine is setup for higher octane there is no more power to be had from using an octane higher than specified... 87. Octane only reflects the resistance to detonation of the fuel, nothing else. However, if maybe you're going to tow a heavy load over South Pass in Wyoming or up the 7-Mile hill in West Virginia on I-64, where you'll be heavy on the turbos for an extended period, a little more octane might be a good idea. Especially in the hotest part of summer. This is not because of more power but simply increasing the margin to detonation when it's hot and the turbos are cranking alot of pressure...

I'm often enough near a Costco and their 91 is almost the same price as other station's 87, so that's all I've been running in the few weeks I've had it. I can't tell you when I'm going to be towing a trailer, that happens randomly. It's getting 12L/100km, so I'm not complaining.

91 is the best I can get here in Idaho. Run it all the time. The 2018 XLT that I traded in got awesome mileage with that stuff. At 65 mph it would get 30 mpg. Around town it always got 19 to 20. The new '21 Lariat is not even broken in yet and only shows 18.5.

800 miles so far, 87 Octane, 22 average mpg.
Impressed with this engine.

A look beyond the "gas milage" question...

This is what my pistons looked like in my 5.0 after 3500 miles running nothing but 76 brand, regular gas.

Maybe Chevron's "Techron" would have been better... maybe "premium" would have been better.

But this seems like an awful lot of carbon build up after 3500 miles.

With these ridiculous gas prices, I've stepped down to 87 octane (Marathon gas only) to save $15 a fill-up. This isn't going to get any better for at least 2.5 years from the looks of it.

I don't blame you, honestly; the gas prices have skyrocketed over the last few weeks and are now continuing to keep going up every few days.

Thankfully my 2.7 runs great on 87 octane, which the owners manual recommends. It’s all I ever run, but I don’t tow anything either and I can see where you’d want more power from 91 or higher. Heck…it still cost me $40.00 the other day to top off half a tank at $4.21 and 3 days later that’s a bargain! Just need to consolidate trips for now.

187.9 / L, cost 194.xx$ CAD to fill from empty (32km to E).
Average 11.9L/100KM

2.7L V6.

I want to go electric, but seeing the news about the f150 L beign 2-3 years out before more available, etc. It's going to be awhile before I can get one 'for a deal' (read as below MSRP). I will be holding onto my girl for a few years for sure.

Not completely sold on all electric yet. Until you can get a full charge in 5 minutes as opposed to taking the same amount of time to fill up my tank, I’m not going there. Yes, 2-3 years out is conservative in my opinion for more competitive pricing and improved charging. My ‘21 Lariat would be much more expensive with comparable options if priced out now. Bottom line; great idea, but much more work to be done.

In the same boat. Going strictly electric doesn't seem an option for me yet. The charge time takes too long and at least a few times per year I'll take a trip that is 2 or 3 times the range of the Lightening. For a comparable EV truck I'd pay 25-30k more than the gas one I have on order. There's still some hurdles for EVs to clear IMO. I like the idea it's just not at a tipping point for me yet.

Why would anyone waste money on premium gas when your owners manual specifically recommends 87 octane. I don’t get it.

It will do that because it's learned to adjust to premium gas. After a few runs, it'll adjust on its own. I went from 94 octane to 87 too, not because of the price, but I usually do due to a lot of highway driving in the winter and revert back to 94 from spring to fall.
