I too, am interested in having the Torsen installed. But I'm in NYC suburbs where they're still charging over MSRP for trucks. Needless to say that if any dealer around here would agree to do it I'd need to take out a second mortgage on my house to get it done. I'm hoping somebody has a decent installation experience closer than Houston...perhaps one where costs could be discussed as well.
I just read this post. I was very nearly compelled to move to Brooklyn, and at the time my plan was to keep my '02 Exploder for as long as possible.....downstate is like a graveyard for vehicles. Hosed down with salt, beaten on by a variety of folks for a wide variety of reasons, dinged with bumpers, dinged with doors, dinged with bikes, constantly trying to avoid delivery "skaters" who have no fear of death (I cannot count how many of those guys I saw plow through intersections on those little two wheel rollerboard thingies.....I don't know how many of them die each year, but it must be a lot), dudes on dirt bikes. Perhaps my quintessential memory of NYC is attempting to go to the one Home Depot in Brooklyn (to purchase lead free dirt, of all things) and getting held up behind a highly "transectional" protest during which an irate Puerto Rican guy threatened to beat me if I didn't plow through the obviously blocked intersection at the next green light. Good times.

Well, if you didn't end up moving to Brooklyn you dodged the biggest bullet of all. NYC is a disaster between the crime and lawlessness, traffic and worst of all the hipsters, it's just awful. I'm there for work every week and if I could make the same money living elsewhere I'd surely leave the area.

I agree. The thing is, upstate is one of the most beautiful areas that I've ever seen.....the entire place is a postcard. The only part that isn't absolutely stunning are those godawful state government buildings in Albany...it's like someone went to the architect and said "Go and read 1984, and then design me what you think the "Ministry of Truth" building would've looked like".

Those of you who have those done this, any real world experience to report? My no one question is deep mud/snow — I find the f150 does not compete w/ my old Tundra TRD pro in snow/mud/loose dirt. And I think having a torsen would “pull” more, proving much more control/confidence.

Well, I thought I would share my update. An Eaton Truetrac (#917A738) for the front 8.8" differential arrived at my door today. I've been waiting for this order for months. The release date for this diff was pushed out several times, but it is finally available. Now I just need to get some free time to get this thing installed.

I will happily share my progress and a few install photos.

Does anyone have the torque specs for the front differential job handy? I have some, but I do not remember who gave me these specs. Here is what I have:

Cap bolts: 77ft/lbs
Ring gear bolts: 94 ft/lbs (Ford Racing says 97-102 ft/lbs)
Cover bolts: 33 ft/lbs
Front driveshaft bolts: 41 ft/lbs
Fill plug: 18 ft/lbs
IWE bolts: 106 in/lbs
Cross member: 66 ft/lbs
Front axle Nut: 30 ft/lbs
Housing mounting bolts: 111 ft/lbs (Rear & Axle Tube) and 129 ft/lbs (Front)

I need the torque specs for the four axle tube bolts.

If anyone sees one that is wrong please share what you have.

I would locate a local independent garage that specializes in off-road vehicles and I would ask them which locker they would recommend. They know first hand which are the least likely to result in a callback from their customers.

Unfortunate that none of the truck manufacturers provide limited slip rear differentials as there are times when they perform better than a locker and are less likely to result in a loss of traction in a turn on wet surfaces.

It depends on how you plan to use the truck and the place you are asking. Asking an off-road place may not be helpful if your goal is performance on a paved road. Those are different animals.

The 9.75" rear has a few aftermarket differential options that have been available for several years now. For trucks with the Super 8.8" rear end, the Ford Mustang LSD can be installed. I installed one of those in my truck. The Eaton Truetrac (#917A738) for the Super 8.8 trucks is expected to hit the market in a few months. I plan to install that as soon as they are available. I already have one on order. For my uses, the Truetrac is a better option than the clutch type LSD.

With anything the more procedures performed the more proficient the individual and less chance of problems. I finally sold my diesel pickup as very few dealers has competent diesel mechanics to diagnose problems and do the necessary repairs.

Lockers change the way the vehicle behaves which is not the case with a LSD and can result in loss of traction on pavement with water or snow and the driver losing control of their vehicle.

I have the electronic locking rear differential in my truck but did not realize that it only works in 4WD or I would not have bothered. When I had a SUV with LSD I could use it in 2WD and found myself very seldom using 4WD with loose road surfaces.

The rear locker works when you push the button regardless of mode. It's the button in the knob, push it and watch it lockup regardless of what the 4wd system or drive mode status is. Just don't run around with it on pavement!

Yes, but it only works at speeds below 25mph. The E-locker automatically disengages when your speed reaches 25mph. If you remove an E-locker, you need to change the dash switch and the TCCM.

The cover bolts seem high for threading into aluminum or what ever it is
