What have you broken on your 14 Gen F150 off road?

What parts have you broken off road?

I am in the process of creating a "spares box." Obviously I plan for flats and torn valve stems because those are common, at least they are for me. But I'm curious about what hard parts (if any) tend to fail off road.

It greatly depends on the vehicle. With some breakage the only fix was to find a welder and with others many more tools are needed and not something I would want to do in the woods. With off road vehicles I have replaced the water pump at 60K intervals as is not something I want to do in the field. I also would replace the hoses in the truck after 3 years as the material deteriorates.

Most people break parts due to poor driving around obstacles or going through creeks at speed. The advantage of having low range gearing is being able to travel at much slower speeds and minimize the damage done when hitting something.

With current trucks I would change the fuel filter more often than recommended. Plug wires are changed at 70K miles and I carry a spare one along with an Ohm meter. With some vehicles I have carried a spare distributor cap when that is a weak point.

I also have never lifted a vehicle as that puts more stress on the suspension and raised the center of gravity, neither of which are good moves.

So how about some context on this? Are you asking for things that are broken on all vehicles or just F150s? And if you’re looking just F150s, what years?

I’ve broken almost everything that can be broken in a CJ seven.

well, this is a 14 Gen F150 site so I just assumed folks would limit their responses to 14Gen F150s.

That does not appear to be the case.

So……you know what they say about assumptions

Actually it seemed like you were looking for a list of what to take into the woods for your F150. However, it seems most think that you were trying to gauge what had been broken on other vehicles as a determining factor for what to take for your F150.

** I highly doubt even 10% of the people on this site actually take their truck off road. As in off-road meaning trails and above not fire roads and hunting camp and camping.

Yeah, I messed up. I went back and edited the title to hopefully reduce the confusion.

I agree about how hard these are pushed off road. I just over think everything and want to be prepared.

Many years ago, I had an Explorer. We went into the Cascades for a weekend camping trip. I took a spare tire and a spare for the spare. Those roads are horrible. Ended up with three flats. Walked for miles out to hitch a ride to a shop in town.

Anyrate, what ever you decide to pack along. Be sure to have the grease, oil, clamps and TOOLS to fit it.

My truck is always broken on the pavement. If I take it off road, it will probably burst into flames.
maybe that’s what it needs. Maybe yours just needs some off-road time in a dirt. Might make it happy.

I start each day hoping for a nice engine fire to keep me warm while waiting on the side of the road for the insurance adjuster to arrive... Maybe it will fall off the lift at the dealership it is going back to tomorrow for an extended stay again... I like to stay positive and hope that it will suicide itself and become something more useful in its next life.

"What have you broken on your F-150 off road?"

Never mind broken. I don't take mine off road simply because it would get dirty!

Tie rods and max tow axle bolts would be my best guess for weak links right after tires when you venture off of gravel roads.

My son and I are considering Imogene pass for spring break. Need a new plan after seeing that Imogene isn't open until summer.

Maybe we will head towards the Appalachians.

Stick to factory wheel offset to help extend the life of tie rods and bearings. Scrub radius/ king pin angle is wildly ignored by most.

If you are doing serious offroading you need CVs, tie rods, tire repair kit, air pump, and tools to replace them on the trail.

That is the bare minimum for me.
