I’ll always prefer a taller tire off road, especially on the trails I end up on. Picking my lines carefully and I’ve had no real issues. That being said I’m also a super nerd for trying to maximize mpg on the daily, so yeah I guess this is still a good size. I’m almost tempted to have a set of aggressive 35’s for Offroad trips, and a set of 33’s that are more road focused for daily. But financially that doesn’t make sense haha
I get that line of thinking. I have a 2" level and 35x11.5 Toyo's now. But was thinking of going down to a 33 when they wear out for the same reasons you mentioned.

I'm very interested in these next. They make probably the best snow/ice tire i've ever driven on so I have high hopes for these AT's

https://na.nokiantyres.com/all-terrain-tires/nokian-tyres-outpost-nat/
Funny enough those Outpost's were my 1st choice. But, at the time they didn't have anything in the 33" - 35" range so ended up with the Toyo AT3's. Haven't been super impressed with them in winter conditions. I felt the Duratracs I had before were better.

Thank you! I was hunting for something like that.
Let me know what you come up with. I don't know tires super well but would be interested in either the 285/70 17's, or 35's. Weight savings is huge for me but don't know enough about P metric. Probably not something I'd trust off-road?

I'm a tire pro, used to work at a tire company.

What are your use cases? Your profile pic is offroad, but what does that mean? Forest Service Roads? Back country? Sharp rocks? Large ruts and washouts? Hunting/ camping trips down a dirt road?

If you want to prioritize off-road more than on-road, you should be running 35s. We have long wheel bases, which requires a taller tire.

285 is a great width. Airing down/ offroad is more about length of tread, not width. In fact, width can actually be worse, because you will be exerting less pressure per square inch of terrain, since there is more rubber.

If you don't need a serious off-road tire, stick to these mild ATs. 275/70/18 is a great size. That is a true 33x11 tire. 275 is the width in mm, that shouldn't give you a big hit to MPG, but still perform very well.

A 33x11 on these trucks will do an FSR with ease.

Keep load rating in mind. We do not need Load Range E, those are for 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks.

C rated is PLENTY for us. C rated still gives you a very tough sidewall, without adding too much weight.

Plus a C-rated tire on a F-150 will actually flex better off-road anyways.

My use case is....diverse. 85% on road, but when I do go off-road its generally all of the above. Forest service road to get to back country, 2 track, sharp rocks, very slow lines through bigger rocks (spotter required) etc. It's very common that I find trails that most people wouldn't drive and try to get to the end of them. Obviously not taking on the Rubicon in this thing, but as close as I can with the clearance I have. I have made the 285/70 17 work in all those conditions. Currently running the C rated BFG KO2. They work well off-road but have horrible wet weather pavement traction (not a huge issue in so-cal). I'd buy these tires again but am always looking for something that has better pavement manners while still being able to do the trails I like. Again why I thought about a 35" dedicated off road set, and a dedicated smaller, on road set.

Ahh ok. I'd definitely go taller then. You've made it work, but you have a greater risk of trail damage or getting hung up.

33s are good for shorter wheel bases in easy to moderate conditions.

285/75/17 would be a great compromise.

Added through axle bike fork mounts to my Diamond Back cover. This is meant for short quick bike hauls so I do not have to take off and remount the bike carrier from the camper.

Today I took "Toppy" down to Warrnambool Field & Game in SW Victoria to camp the night and shoot some clay targets tomorrow, peaceful; just the kangaroos and I 🤣

Edit: and this put a sour note onto an otherwise fantastic trip (thank you Mr. Animal Carter for going off into the stones when you didn't need to 🙄):

Using my DIY four way air hose.

Got a pretty level spot, which is rare around here, and why I mainly use a rooftop tent, versus a ground tent. Only paid campgrounds have flat pads here.

Pictures always flatten things out, very steep climb with obstacles. My camping spot had a nice little gate keeper at the entrance. Rocks were about knee height with the washouts. Some people had some serious scrapes before, judging by one of the rocks! It was a great spot, on top of the mountain with an awesome view.

I picked up my cousin in law on the side of the road as the tow truck was finishing up hooking up to his 2012 F350 that had just blown the engine. While hitching the 29’ apex trailer the tow truck drivers asked if my F150 could pull that. Pull it is easy, stopping and keeping it between the lines is the hard part. Seemed to work, but the 40mph winds made towing on the ball sporty.

Can’t wait to hear what failed on the F350.
