What’s the biggest tow behind camper you would pull with your F150?

I would want a total tow weight of no more than 9,000 lbs with my F-150. It is rated by Ford to pull 11,000 lbs with its Max Tow package but for going through the mountains I would prefer to have more of a margin available.

It also is a concern with the time to get the truck from 20 mph to 65 mph to safely merge with traffic from onramps. It is also why I prefer to have lower gears for vehicles that will be used to tow.

That tow capacity of 11,000 is moot though for many/most trailers, (that weigh far less than that) since Payload will rarely be adequate with these 1/2 ton'rs.

Or put another way, what trailer weighs 11,000 lbs with a tongue weight less than the total cargo capacity of an F150? (that isn't HDPP)

Still waiting on my 2023 King Ranch 6.5' PowerBoost with MaxTow. I'm estimated a payload of 1600-1800.

Payload remains my biggest concern, but there are two Cougars which could be in my future (3 if you count my wife):
  • Cougar 22MLS (645 hitch, 5887 empty, 7200 GVWR, 26' 10" length)
  • Cougar 25RDS (835 hitch, 6419 empty, 8800 GVWR, 29' 10" length)
I believe that the 22MLS is an easy "yes" for this truck. The 25RDS is right on the edge of where I feel comfortable, even with a 6.5" bed.

I may still go for the 25RDS, because I'm in love with that floorplan - but the loaded hitch weight concerns me. I'll easily have 500lb in the truck with passengers and gear, and I have to figure out how to keep that tongue weight under 1100lb - or even 1000lb.

If my truck doesn't show up, I think I'll be towing very little in a lifted Rubicon Unlimited.

The gear you mentioned that will be in the truck, can you pack it into the trailer to keep the payload number down? Did you order the OnBoard scale and SmartHitch with the truck? That helps when figuring out tongue weight and payload.

The scales are cool, but I’m trying to calculate before I drop $40k on a travel trailer.

I’ve considered rearranging gear, and will make such considerations each time I tow. I don’t want to run it too close, though. As an example, my truck will be rated to tow over 12k pounds- but I’m stopping at 9k GVWR on the trailer with a target to not load above 8k.

1600-1800lbs for a Powerboost KingRanch is sort of rare air.

If you don't have power running boards, tailgate options, panoroof, bed liner,...... You might sneak up on 1600?

But I don't know how you could get much more than that with a "stripped" KingRanch Powerboost.

Although not carrying around a generator or gas cans is just like getting an extra 100-150lbs in reality.

Or put another way, a KingRanch Powerboost with 1500 lbs of Payload is equal to another truck with 1650kbs of Payload but with a generator and fuel tanks in the bed. :)

The 25RDS will be overweight. The 22MLS will be tight. Have you been to any Cougar forums to see other members with both models to get their real world weights ? Factory specs are notoriously severely low across the industry.

I guess it depends on how many boxes you checked from the factory. I’ve got a ‘21 lariat powerboost 6.5 bed with every option (besides max tow and fx4). Payload is just below 1500lbs. Fun fact, max tow increases towing capacity but reduces payload capacity, and payload kills the PB. I’d say your payload capacity will be closer to 1500lbs.

Ford lists payload for a PB SCREW 4x4 157” at 1810lb.

To your point, from there I would look at the weight for 601A, moonroof, and (ironically) max tow - which is likely additional unsprung weight on the 3/4 floating axle.

This entire exercise is vaporware for me right now -until the truck is in my hands, I don’t even have half the equation figured out. For now, I’ll temper my window shopping and focus on the 22MLS. Im reasonably confident that its tongue weight won’t be an issue, especially with a good WDH.

If you’re OK with the XL trim, a HDPP will get you this payload capacity. 2023 4x2 Supercrew

I'd be very surprised if your payload is that high. My guess would be under 1400 with other options and max tow. Max tow actually reduces payload, believe it or not.

Also, Ford's numbers don't include driver, passenger, or gear in the truck (or a heavy hitch ball/WD hitch). It all adds up fast. A Powerboost already sucks up a lot of payload with the battery.

What’s your power train on that? I’m pretty sure PowerBoost would knock off 500lb or more.

Can't get a Powerboost with HDPP.
So for someone after that sweet ProPower Boondocking magic, an HDPP door jamb sticker is moot. (as amazing as they can be)

I'm an RV fulltimer and I can tell you that KingRanch Powerboost is a wonderful way to enjoy the lifestyle. You just have to properly equip it for using ALL that Payload and you will be a happy camper.

I'd recommend planting that rear end with a rear Antisway bar, some oem springpack assistance, (RAS works really good), some rear shocks, and that good WDH you mentioned.
Tires can make a big difference too.

None of that will legally increase your Payload capacity, but in the real world it WILL transform that chassis at full load.
