Hi guys,

Just a quick question with hopefully a simple answer.

It's common practice when launching a boat to unplug the trailer lights, especially if they are not sealed.

When I do this, the truck immediately recognizes that the trailer is disconnected. It is obviously using the light connection as the criteria to determine if the vehicle is connected to a trailer (and disable cross traffic/park assist).

So when I try to back the trailer with the lights disconnected, one of the systems determines that a crash is imminent and continually slams on the brakes. Would this be the cross traffic radars or the park assist sensors?

I'm surprised with all of the other tech and high resolution 360 camera, that the light connection is the only factor in determining if there is a trailer. It would seem reasonable to consider that if something is moving in sync with the vehicle, that determining a crash is not appropriate when backing a trailer.

Is there a quick button or menu item to disable whatever function is slamming on the brakes?

It's the button at the top of your infotainment screen left of the hazard button with the P and backup lines on it. Turns off blindspot and backup braking assist. Whenever I have a bike rack on the back I've got to turn that off or I wont get out of my driveway.

Thanks...I'll try that again. I thought i had tried that and it was turning off the notification (beeping) but not the slamming of brakes. I'll try again and confirm. Does that disable the cross-traffic as well?

I have vivid memory of this problem when my ‘21 was new. I was totally perplexed, concerned, annoyed to the max until i figured it out. Once you experience it, you will never forget to turn it off when necessary. Good that you posted this question to save others some uneccessary grief!!

Im pretty sure if you go into your trailer settings and set up that trailer and select it when using it that will stop and your blind spot monitors will work also.

I tried the plastic button on the top of the infotainment screen, and it does not work to disable the braking...that why I originally was asking if the braking was coming from another source, like the cross traffic.

I did find what does work. When you put it in reverse, the camera screen will appear and then there will be some soft keys overlaid. The white icon in the upper right worked to disable the Reverse Brake Assist.

After further review, it can be done with the top button, but it is not intuitive. When you are already in Reverse pressing the button does absolutely nothing. When the truck is in Park, pressing the button brings up a menu of nearby Parking locations...not exactly helpful but if you look close to the top right of the parking suggestions there is also the small icon similar to the reverse screen. At least thats how it is on my truck with the current SW version.

Its obvious now...with the truck in reverse just hit the small white icon in the top right of the screen.

You can also disable the reverse collision assist feature which I did on my truck as it would brake repeatedly when backing up with a hitch mounted bike rack. A fairly crude implementation by the Ford engineers.

My XLT hard button is what your soft button is, one button push anytime turns off any rear brake influence. Very odd that is a different key on the Lariat.

I have the same issue now when my tailgate is down, like when hauling plywood. The truck did not exhibit this behavior for the first two years of ownership.

Same here. The icon on the hard button above the screen is exactly the same as the OP’s soft button.
2022 XLT 302A PB.
When I press that button is inhibits the rear brake assist, the backup warnings, etc. It sounds like it does all the same things the OP’s sift button does.
Note that AFAIK, the soft button does not appear on the screen in my truck.
