My dealer (well, the one I do maintenance at, not the one I purchased my truck from) currently has:
Twenty one "standard" 2022 F-150 (all SuperCrew), XLT's and Lariats.
Three Eclips trucks (Sherod)
One Black Ops

All trucks has $1500 "Market Adjustment" above MSRP.
Ford F-150 Truck shortage? Who says there is a truck shortage? 20220917_083428

^That^ says there is a truck shortage (whether or not they get that asking price).

When there's market equilibrium the 'ask' will be MSRP, when there's market glut the 'ask' will be below MSRP (for a dealer with a 'traditional' business model).

My local dealer has 42 2022 F-150 listed on the website all but 9 are listed as "Not in stock, in transit or on order". Those they have they are asking (obviously negotiable) 5k over except for the Raptor they are asking 40k over. Definitely a shortage here compared to when I bought in early 2021.

State of my local market here in MD this month: our usual local dealer had lot trucks* marked up $5k (but -orders- have no markup**) BUT they only have 5 F-150s in their possession. The next dealer over where we had some service done recently has quite a bit more on their lot and had no markup and even has a discount on some vehicles.

*except their demo Lightning, which my usual salesman they said expect to mark up an eye watering $50k when they’re allowed to sell it. They’re not even allowing test drives of it. He cancelled his Lightning order with the price hike.
**they basically are operating business as usual with orders, honored my price protection, etc so it seems only lot vehicles are currently marked up. But interestingly, only their website shows the markups, there aren't markups physically on the vehicles. I didn’t ask to see if the markup was only for online orders. This dealer gets a lot of out of state customers on online orders due to their location and many of those customers are from affluent suburbs of a city in another state.

My dealer was asking 10K over sticker for a BL Bronco. They had a Lightning Plat there for 93K. They are all greedy nuts! But they are lucky they have 23 of anything new in stock. They've been selling used non stop.
That Blackops is nice. Did ya catch what model it was an price?

Oh, but they didn't. That's sticker, and likely the demo unit they can't sell. The cheapest light plat is $113k that you can buy...

I went to my local dealer to test drive a '22. They had probably 10+ 22's on the lot. Manager has been driving the lariat around, MSPR around 65k, which now has 8k miles on it. I asked how much. Salesman came back and said "85k". I am looking forward to them losing money, they're so greedy. And now that used car prices are falling and the recession is here, it's only going to get worse.

Yep. My dealer has a Lightning on the lot parked front and center. It’s a demo that’s not for sale. They get tons of inquiries only to be told that they can’t buy it.

The dealers all got a demo they have to hold on to for six months as a demo. What’s crazy is my salesman said another dealer had already tried to get them to agree to give it to them for MSRP + $40k when the demo period is up, presumably so they could sell it for more, leading them to plan to mark it up $50k from MSRP. Because of its potential future value they aren’t even allowing it to be driven on test drives…even if you’ve got a Lightning on order.

The measure of the shortage is not the number of trucks on the lot. it's the 7 month delay that it takes to get an ordered truck. If that number goes up you'll see more/higher dealer markups for trucks on the lot. If that delay goes down you'll see us go back to MSRP for all on lot trucks.

Right now so many people are bypassing trucks on the lot because either they don't have what they want on the lot or because of the markup. a dealer with 10 or even 20 trucks on the lot isn't much when you have at least three trim levels with four engines sizes and three bed lengths, and a multitude of colors.

I wanted a super cab with the larger gas tank and an electronic locking rear differential and there were none available in the entire state of California. I ended up buying a super crew that is a foot longer than I wanted and paid $5,000 above MSRP and that was in May. Currently the dealers in the state continue to charge an additional $5,000 for trucks and then one also has to buy packages and add-ons one would not have wanted. $71,000 (plus taxes and DMV fees) for an XLT pickup is insane but we live in crazy times when pandemic profiteering is permissible and even encouraged.

The "Market Adjustment" crap is why the Ford CEO is getting royally pissed at the dealerships and wants to do away with them.

I want to say the ghost inventory is from all the active orders that dealership has placed. So Ford and the dealership website will reflect this huge inventory but when you get there they only have 2-3 in stock and have 20K in "Dealer Accessories" added on to inflate the price.
