Steering Wheel Trim Swap

Anybody ever successfully swapped just the plastic trim on their steering wheel? I have a Lariat Sport, and I feel like the plastic on the wheel looks particularly chintzy. It doesn't seem to match any of the other myriad colored and textured plastics throughout the cabin. I know the higher trim levels get a nicer looking trim on the wheel, but they have other accents that don't make sense in a Lariat. However, I was watching Ben Hardy's drive of the refreshed to 2022 Expedition, which basically has a Lightning dashboard, and I noticed the trim on the wheel is just a little nicer looking than mine. It's more of a glossy gunmetal and kind of matches the center console trim pieces. I'd have to track this trim down first, which will likely be very difficult, but is it feasible to swap?

Absolutely. I did the same to my 2017 XL.

You would just have to remove the airbag, and the L + R control clusters to pop it off. There may be an additional screw or 2 holding the trim in

Yes. Remove the airbag, remove the T20 screws, pull off the trim, remove the T8 screws holding the buttons in place.

It is likely possible if you swap same trim level to same trim level, IE Lariat to Lariat. Most trim levels seem to swap with no issues at least on the F-150 steering wheels.

I know 100% it is not possible for some steering wheels. I have a 2022 Platinum. I purchased a Raptor steering wheel from a member here and pulled everything apart to install it. I was in the middle of swapping the Platinum trim to the Raptor steering wheel when I found that it will not fit without some serious modifications to the Raptor wheel AND the Platinum trim panel. The bottom section of the trim is completely different on the Raptor and Platinum. The factory Platinum wheel also has recesses built into the steering wheel to accommodate the additional depth of the Platinum trim. The bottom of the Platinum trim is 2 parts plastic welded together.

Does your Platinum have adaptive steering? If not the trim and wheels should all be the same.

Why can’t you use a Raptor wheel? My Platinum was already wired, literally just installed the wheel.

I figured you would say that you had adaptive steering. I’m glad mine does not have it.
