Mine is definitely exterior. My son heard it while he was outside the truck. I leave for work pretty early in the morning so I drove with windows up and windows down to double check. I’ll let you know what I find out.
Have someone lay by your exhaust as you step on the accelerator pedal. Went through this for 6 months on my last truck. Ended up being a valve towards the rear of the exhaust pipe that "chirped" when it opened
Good idea! I was going to set my phone at various points under the truck along the length to see approximately where it was coming from.

I dont think it does, but havent tried with the hood up
I definitely don’t need the hood up to hear it. I can hear it with the window down while idling and pressing the accelerator. Give it a try.
