I was always under the impression that you shouldn’t use 4x4 on dry pavement. In sport mode it engages 4x4. Can someone smarter than me explain why this is now ok.

it’s engaging 4 Auto. 4 auto is not the same as traditional 4wd that you’re thinking of (4Hi). 4 Auto is supplying power to all 4 wheels but the center differential (transfer case) is unlocked, which means the front and rear axles can spin at different speeds, which alleviates the issue of using it on pavement. It’s basically AWD in 4 Auto, and 4 Hi is traditional 4WD that will bind up on hard surfaces. 4Auto is great for putting power down (hence why it does it in sport mode) and for times like when it has snowed and snow plows have been out but there are still some slick spots.

That is interesting. I have a XLT that doesn’t have the auto button for 4x4.

You're right about not using 4Hi on pavement - that's also in the manual.

I suspect that Sport mode for a truck w/o 4A is actually 2Hi rather than 4Hi. Sport mode in my Lariat defaults to 4A, but I can then select 2Hi, and it's still in Sport mode.

well sorry for wasting everyone’s time. I went out this morning and double checked and it did not go into 4x4. I think when I was cycling through modes and it went into off road mode then Switched to sport and saw “4x4 shift in progress” I assumed it was going into 4x4 not out of 4x4. Sorry fellas

Yeh. Ive done a few 0-60 tests in sport mode then have to hit 4H manually. Again only in a straight line then switch back to 2H. Yeh I tried some of the other modes that switch in out of 4H to 2H automatically. I don't have rock crawl but thinking of adding it via Forescan. I think thats the only one that goes into 4L automatically. Maybe hill decent too. Pretty versatile. I also found off road display mode, nice, with pitch, roll and steering angles. kool

Where is the sport mode select. Can’t find it on my 22 XLT SC 4x4 sport 5.0. I can’t find tow mode either.

Do you have dial that is in the middle of the 2 and 4wd modes? Rotate that left or right for different drive modes.

In this pic, to the left of the climate controls:
