Today I took my truck for a quick drive to the store and I noticed that the truck seemed to vibrate at speeds over 80kph/50mph. It seems to be coming from the back end (and I don’t have a load). It currently has 2800km/1700 miles.

I did take it on a dirt road a few weeks ago (truck is basically parked underground and doesn’t get much mileage), other than it being dirty I didn’t see any visual issues with the suspension.

Before I take it to the dealer, what should I check first?

Update:

Problem: Dirt/rocks in the wheels.
Fix: Used pressure washer to clean wheels.

I feel like an idiot.

Dirt/mud inside wheels?

I hate to admit it, but this might be it. I did take to for a car wash after and there was some dirt inside the wheels. Would it make that much of a impact?

I’ll know later when I take it out tomorrow.

Hopefully that’s it. Would be a little embarrassing bringing it in just to have the dealer wash it out and give it back…

I know I had the same issue (on a little car mind you) and that’s all it was.

Of course mud can cause an imbalance, so can snow or ice in winter.

Even dried mud in the treads can create a noticeable imbalance. Heck, even lost wheel weights will upset the balance enough for most people to notice. Generally, the imbalance will increase or only be noticeable at speed.

Make sure your lug nuts are tight and that there’s no excessive play in your bearings or suspension, otherwise it might be a better option to have it towed. Though generally, loose wheels will be noticeable at all speeds and your wheel would have fallen off already.

I’ve also bent wheels and if it’s minor, it’s usually only noticeable at speed as well.

Make sure lane keeping assist is off maybe. Manmade vibration freaked me out when I had it on and didn't know it. LOL But felt like front end issue not rear.

Same thing has happened to me with snow/ice buildup in the wheels. Just another wintertime joy.
