While I realize that seeing surface rust on the undercarriage of a brand new truck is a bit disconcerting, but even if it did not come with any surface rust when originally picked up, I would think within a matter of weeks after driving it that surface rust would develop anyway.

Am I off here?

Or is the expectation that there should not be any surface rust anywhere within the first X number of months driving the vehicle?
The 16 I traded off didn't have any. Most of the new ones on lot had shiny new paint no rust.

This got me curious so I popped underneath the truck and grabbed a few pics. Not the best lighting but definitely doesn’t have near the rust some of the other folks here are showing.

Build date of 12/20/20, took delivery on 1/13/21. So she’s seen almost 3 weeks of Minnesota Salt Brined roads, literally the worst stuff you can expose a vehicle to. Makes me wonder if some sort of anti-rust/corrosion coating was missed on your trucks.

Checked mine last evening, although I didn't get the u-joint. Build date of 12/22, took delivery on 1/21 from Granger in Iowa and drove to Florida. Truck had 10 miles on it at time of delivery. Seems that the right side of the axles were standing in water or uncovered and allowed to rust?

Curious as to what others hear back from Ford and their dealers.

In my opinion all of these pictures in this thread have too much rust to be acceptable at this age. I'm going to check and I will refuse delivery if I have anything close to what was shown here.

My 2014 has less rust than these!!! Ugh. I’m sure it has no effect, but dang.

To those of you with rusty rear ends (feels like there's a joke buried in there, but I'm not sharp enough to dig it out...):

Where was your truck built? Dearborn or KC?

I rolled by my local dealer this morning before it opened. Literally climbed under multiple trucks and didn't see much in the way of remarkable surface rust. I am in CA, and obviously lack the salty roads, but I am thinking that this might be a storage issue.

Maybe a bunch of rear-ends were just sitting out in the elements during build delays from Covid or other issues.

Just spit-balling.

Either-way this makes me sick to see. My truck won't arrive until March, but if it looks anything like what I am seeing here as a brand-new truck... Ford can keep it.

I looked under some recent builds on lot none had this. Dealer said 1 out 100 have this.

Dearborn. I’ve had my truck for 2 months now. Not sure what the rear end looked like new, but it certainly has surface rust on the back side of the pumpkin and on the ends near the wheels.
