Hello,

Does anyone have recommendations for their winter recovery kit? I think I'll need a kinetic tow rope (shackles too I believe to attach it to the front shackles on the truck), a shovel, maybe some strap on winter studs, a shovel etc...

Just want to be prepared and leverage the community!

Thanks

I can comment on this as i've used my winter recovery kit many times, and live in an area that we routinely get 300" of snow each winter.

Im using a 30 foot kinetic tow rope, two soft shackles (these are awesome, but make sure to get the double loop ones - it'll make your life easier) and have a steel shackle that slides into the hitch. I do have a set of traction boards in my Ranger and those have got me out of more situations then my tow rope. My tow rope has only ever towed OTHER vehicles out of the snow.

A very standard quick tow would be : rope through the steel shackle in my hitch. Soft shackle attacked to other vehicles tow point with it looped around the rope. Really quick and efficient with minimal chance of damage.

link to the rope I've used successfully at least 6 times

For recovery boards, I just bought X-bull brand on amazon and they are pretty beat up but still work. Couldn't justify the cost of maxxtraxx

Rhino makes a good kit at an affordable price versus piecing something together. We run their pro kit in the gladiator and I forget about it until we need it. They are pretty popular in the Jeep community as a cost effective way to CYA without breaking the bank or over thinking it. That said after a decade in the Jim Thorpe Pocono mountain area I'd opt for a single set of maxtrax over most of the standard gear, including a winch. Don't go cheap on gloves though in any case. Ball and stuff a windbreaker (or better yet cheap used military parka from an army/navy store) into your recovery bag.

I have Matt's Off-Road kinetic kit, (Yankum). It is a little expensive but worth it. I have some steel clevis hard shackles, a folding snow shovel, a tree saver strap, and a 2" receiver recovery attachment point in my kit too.

Maybe not winter specific, but traction boards are awesome, particularly when you've got 4WD and a rear locker. I got stuck looking at land in my first few months of owning this truck, found a metal grate and jammed it under one rear wheel. Got unstuck with ONE wheel with traction.

If you have a Princess Auto near you, they were running Black Friday deals on recovery ropes and recovery boards and I imagine they'll run one for boxing day. I picked up a recovery rope for $47.99 and receiver shackle for my truck and a spiffy carrying case for it all. I'd splurge for a fancier one if I was doing recoveries regularly, but as an emergency item it'll do.

I envy the guys with the big buck ropes, but I just keep Rhino recovery strap in a bag with some shackles and the thing that goes in the receiver for a shackle.
I usually need it for myself and I have found its a lot easier to get help when you are standing there with a strap and shackle ready to go!

Retired and not looking. The wife is looking for me.
My suggestion takes a little daily time, but ice down a case of beer every day before going out. In the summertime here in the porous south Texas city of McAllen it can be very effective at letting you better assess your situation. It may be that by the next morning it will have resolved itself.

A little snow and ice can easily be handled in the same manner.

For those that are lazy, two bottles of Macallan 12 can perform the same duty. Just make sure to purchase the sherry cask version. Know that they may need to be rotated out on occasion, which I thoroughly enjoy.

I have a set of GoTreads that I take with me when I will be in adverse conditions. They are awesome, I have a set that we keep in each of my rolloff trucks and my drivers have always been able to get themselves out of mud/etc. I've been really impressed at how well they have held up on 33k Lb trucks.
