My first post here. I have been dead set on the PB since it was announced. But the more and more I look at it I realize I don’t really need it if I won’t be using it like a generator. The gas mileage compared to the 3.5 ecoboost doesn’t offset the price increase at all. Is there any other reason people are wanting the PB?

I ordered the PB because of the fuel savings. I currently have a 2018 5.0. It gets around 21 on the hwy with a tail wind blowing, more like 14 in the city.
It also has a 144 litre tank. It costs me around $150 to $170 fill from empty. Canadian money, so $10 bucks US ?.

My calculations show that I will save 30 to 50 dollars per tank just in the fill up and I should go just as far. It looks like it will work out to $120 to $200 dollars per month in fuel savings alone.

I won't be using the generator all of the time, but camping and if the power goes out, I can power most of my house in an emergency.

My problem is going to be trying to stay out of the Boost. Apparently, it's going to be a rocket.

Have a great Thanksgiving.

I liked the PowerBoost, but went with the 3.5 EcoBoost instead. For me, the PowerBoost only offers 30 more horsepower, and the likelihood of being difficult to modify later down the road if you’re into that. The standard EcoBoost also allows you to tow more.

I was also a little hesitant about this being the first year of the PowerBoost and the potential problems associated with a first year run of brand new technology.

Both are great in my limited experience and it really comes down to what you want to do with the truck.

Do you feel like the powerboost accelerated much faster than the regular 3.5 ecoboost. I’m hearing the powerboost is quite a bit heavier also

Unless you drive all highway it will certainly pay for itself.

I thought this too. Until I did the math on it. It would take years to save money from the tiny MPG difference to make up for the price of the engine upgrade.

By its very nature, its heavier because of the battery. However those negatives are washed out because of the power increase and torque. The EcoBoost had plenty of power, but o noticed slight turbo lag. There was no turbo lags in the PowerBoost.

Can you share your math?

The powerboost gets 24mpg. 3.5 eco gets 20.

Lets use 15,000 miles per year. And gas at $2.50 a gallon.

Powerboost
15,000/24=625 gallons of gas
625x2.50=$1562 per year on gas

3.5 Ecoboost
15,000/20=750 gallons of gas
750x2.50=$1875 per year on gas

1875-1562= $313 per year difference in gas

Adding the Powerboost instead of the Eco is an increase of $1722. So divide that by the fuel savings per year. 1722/313=5.5 years.

So you dont break even on fuel savings until 5.5 years if you drive 15,000 miles a year. And by that time the 80,000 mile warranty is up on the battery. Because you will be at 82,500 miles when you break even on fuel savings. Its not worth it to me in terms of fuel savings

Yep, that’s the same math I have. I drive a city commute where I would come out further ahead. I’m torn between the two motors, but the idea of not having to buy a generator for my house (just refrigerators and some lights and a heater really) offsets another chunk. I’m also not counting on gas staying under $3. It is definitely what I would call a wash in that it could go either way over about five years, but you get all of the additional functionality and power.

Thank you all for laying it out that concisely.

It goes to show, that electric and hybrid powertrains operating costs in regards to fuel savings is nominal in the early years.

The buyer has to ultimately determine if it’s right for them.

I think Ford has done a good job making the case for the PowerBoost. Rather than just another dreary hybrid with a modest MPG increase, they have made the truck high performance (in my opinion), and designed it to actually have a great deal of extra utility if one elects the HEV PowerBoost (ProPower On Board).

Another benefit of the powerboost is that 3:55 or 3.73 E-lock are standard, a 30.6 gas tank, and the 2:4 kw generator.

yup. Trust me I want it. But I dont think I can do it with the first year model of it

I would agree, but from what I understand this hybrid design is very similar to the Fusion Hybrid and its been around for years. They give you 8 yrs 160 thousand mile warranty, that should more than cover any issues (at least that was what I was told). That is even more coverage than the regular ECOBOOST engine and regular transmission at 100000 mile. (I think my warranty numbers are correct).
