I might be the only person to ever have this issue but here goes. I went to do a drain and refill on my transmission, only to find that a dealer or the previous owner had rounded the aluminum cap for the dipstick. It came off, but the crows foot flare wrench had to be modified to swing around farther on the nut since the heat shield makes clearance a little snug.

I didn’t want to put that piece of junk back on…… so I found a steel replacement. I just had to wrap a small rubber band around the top of the dip stick to help it hang on to the cap when it lifts up for a tighter friction fit.

I was just messing with my dipstick the other week.

I think the stick is designed to separate from the cap anyway. So being loose I don't think matters.

I personally wouldn't put that rubber band around it. The rubber band almost certainly will break down with the heat and I'd be concerned that parts of the rubber band will fall into the transmission.

You are definitely right. I only used the rubber band because I was hustling to beat a thunderstorm that was getting ready to pound me as I worked in my driveway. I didn't get to make the last trip for parts that I needed, after checking fluid levels.

I will be using a small O ring to keep the friction fit that the OEM piece had though. I will run by Napa to check their box and buy one.
