I’ve been wanting to do something to improve my platinum wheels. Today I added Vvivid Ultra Gloss black automotive film to the center flat areas. Applying film is pretty difficul, especially if you’re not experienced (I‘m not!) The difficulty comes in fitting the excess film around the deep curves of these wheels. If someone made a decal precut to the flat area it would be MUCH easier to install.

Not sure if it really shows in the pics but the difficulty lead to more wrinkles and flaws than acceptable. We’ll just call this a mock-up! If I can’t figure out how to make a template to create my own decals I’ll probably have to look into getting them painted. I definitely don’t have enough skill to wrap them. Automotive wrap is a temporary solution anyway.

Anyway, I’m really pleased with the concept.

What size sheet did you order? Enough for all 4 or just one as a test?

I ordered 5'x6' because I'm also going to wrap the Platinum tailgate plate. If you're just doing the flat portions each wheel needs at least 21"x21".

He quoted me $600. I might consider doing it but I can't really afford to be without my truck for several days.
Thats like 1/2 the price of new wheels. While it might help with the look, it still won’t be the best looking wheel. Selling them for $900 and getting wheels of you choice might work out better.

When you do the tail gate billboard, please post some diy pics or videos … I plan on doing the same thing (remove the panel and it to an auto wrap shop and let them order some vinyl similar to Smoked Quartz.) I've had a quick look at it and I assume the billboard is held in place with nuts inside the gate, so it's just a matter of disassembly, hopefully without fully disassembling the complex stuff like removing the tailgate step, just deploying it to gain access to a few nuts and then spudging off some sealant … I'm also curious to see if behind the billboard there's finished paint … I'm tempted to take off the P L A T I N U M ("I paid too much for this Lariat") billboard and maybe just put some nice hardware in the mounting holes.

$600 is about right. $100-ish per wheel for a full powdercoat, but if the idea is to just accent/contrast the spokes, the prep and spray labor would be a lot less. In any case, I'd rather keep the factory wheels and have a complete truck, buy aftermarket wheels and sell those later when selling the truck put back to stock, but then again, I've done that many times and I have a trailer full of take-off wheels and tires … I should try to sell those old parts to pay for some new parts … : )

For my second attempt, I made a pattern I then used to cut out decals the same size as the flat section. This works much better.

I still wasn’t able to get it as perfect as paint but it turned out really good. Application is not as simple as just putting on a sticker. It does require lots of patience and manipulation with the heat gun but you can get a very good result this way.

The next test will be long term durability.

Did you happen to see this thread?

Was applying plastidip ever an option for you? I’m thinking going that route with the platinum wheels. Straightforward application, can be easily removed, nice uniform look.

Another nice dyi project on the budget. Definitely not a 600$ powder coat option a body shop was charging.
I thought about Plasti Dip but it seemed like a lot of precision masking. Having been through this process, I doubt this was any easier. The finish on this is extremely smooth. I wonder how much orange peel texture you get with Plasti Dip?

I look forward to seeing how it holds up, looks great! Do you have a leveling kit on this truck?

So far holding up just like new. I hand wash only so far. That probably helps.
Thanks! I think I'm going to steal this idea when my truck arrives :)

(y)

I have a pdf of the black area I’d be willing to share for a small fee. Or just offer advice for free.
