Payload Package - Unicorn?

I'm in the market for a new (used) truck. I'd like it to be a Lariat, but one that can do work. Here's what I'm shopping for - but I just can't seem to find one with the payload package (7850 gvwr). Is this hard to find? Seems to be a bit of a unicorn. Anyone have that package?

The HDPP is not available in the Lariat (or above trims). According to the Ford order guide for 2022 it's only available on the XL and XLT and for the the XLT it's only available on the low and mid.

For non powerboost

As far as I know the best GVWR is not dependent on options except box length as long as you get max tow (note 2024s may have changed this)
7050# - supercrew short box
7150# - supercrew long box

If you are talking about payload, believe some lariats have as high as 1800-1900 lbs but I believe that isn't with high package. Moonroof, tailgate step, powered running boards are big hitters. 4 wheel drive and 20" tires are so big hitters. There is a list with estimates by option if you are interested.

I went with XLT (302 high pkg) to maximize payload. Now after reading this forum know that I could have come pretty close to my payload with a low package lariat which would have given me 4A option I don't have.

I have what you listed above in basically a 501A, with a lot of the options that come on the base 502A, and have 1948 on the sticker.

MaxTow will take about 40-50lbs off I think. You might have trouble finding a 502A that doesn't come with more heavy options like the sunroof, power steps, powered tailgate, which will all eat into that. If you got a "clean" 502A then you would come in right about the same.

Are you handy? You could turn a HDPP 301A into a 502A with some work. Had I known what we all know now when I ordered I would have gone that way and upgraded over time.

This is what I used to spec my truck. Got from this forum. Note it is for a 2021 5L 4x4. Ended up very accurate estimate vs what I received.

I went with 3.5EB which cost me 35#, max tow delta vs min tow pkg is ~35# as well. For my build, 20" tires and 4x4 were big hitters but with XLT high didn't have a lot of other luxury options which I regret now given how much I like the truck.

Closest you can get is 1) XLT 301 and then add in a bunch of the creature comforts or 2) get a PB and try to strip out extra weight. The PB has the second highest GVWR at 7350#, but eats a lot of that with extra hybrid stuff. The other issue is that the Max Tow 3/4 float 9.75" rear axle has been a catastrophe, and is either a roll of the dice or a ticking time bomb depending upon who you ask. I was bummed that I didn't get a Max Tow until I started to see all of the threads on the axle bolt shearing. That doesn't directly affect payload per se, but it is closely tied to max towing ratings and may be something that you choose to avoid even if it provided a higher number.

For reference, I have a 302A PB and my plan is to drive it into the dirt and replace with with a series-hybrid (e.g. Ramcharger, just well-engineered) Superduty. You may want/need a vehicle before that option is available.

my Lariat 4X4 SUPERCREW CAB with 6.5 foot bed V8 has 1689 pounds payload capacity. pretty good amount if you ask me.

I went and got a XLT 301A (without any payload package) and added comforts as you said (heated steering wheel being a huge one for me).

The integration was seamless and my truck has 1998LB payload and a 6' box

I did not order max tow on purpose and got the standard 9.75 rear end which appears to be bomb-proof

I would love to do that - nice work btw. Several people on the forum have done in their 2021/2. Getting the right transfer case and the right forscan programming seems a bit daunting for my capabilities (adding ambient lighting and unreal engine/climate bar to my XLT is about the limit of my forscan capabilities). Wish the there were shops that would do this mod (and front bumper sensors + adaptive cruise). 4A 2ould come in handy in the cdn winters.

Forscan change was the easiest part! Agree on 4A, it is sooooooooooooo nice to get the driveline to hook up when traction is sketchy...

Yeah the way to get the highest payload is definitely a two-wheel drive lower trim truck. I would love a HDPP but they are just too darn hard to find.

I'm going to stick with used now that prices are coming down, and for the past couple of refreshes, an XL STX two-wheel drive SuperCrew 5.0 has been about 2000 to 2050 lb of payload.

And a 302A SuperCrew 5.0 2 wheel drive has been right around 1950 lb. No moonroof of any kind of course.

Each one I've looked at has had a GVWR of 6,800 lbs. I've spent a lot of the past couple years digging through window stickers as trucks that fit my criteria come on the market.

I live in the south now and have only ever had to drive, so I am sticking with two wheel drive with a locker and I'll be set with high payload.

Good luck in your search. Nice to see people paying attention to payload because it sure eats up fast if you're towing even a 6,000 lb camper with gear, people etc. let alone the mods people do that they don't realize take away from the payload haha.
