Hope everyone is having a fantastic start to the week.

- I currently use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Full Synthetic 5w30
- I have 5qt of Valvoline Full Synthetic High Mileage 5w30 which I bought by accident last month
- I'm happy with the Pennzoil and wish to continue with it
- I don't want the Valvoline to go to waste or sit on the shelf for months until I reach high mileage (100,000km away from that)

Question

- Use the Valvoline and top it off with the Pennzoil on the next change and continue on with the Pennzoil per my preference
or
- Use the Pennzoil and top it off with the Valvoline for the next few oil changes

The research that I have done is it doesn't matter both are Full Synthetics and good oils.

It probably won't hurt anything........... but Valvoline won't even recommend mixing oils between their different lines.

I just saw a video where a youtuber (Midwest F150 I believe) asked Valvoline about this exact thing. Valvoline stated that the additive packages are not advisable to mix.

Like I said, it "probably" won't hurt anything. I'd just go ahead and hang on to that extra bottle and use it at a later date since it won't go bad anyway.

I'm currently running Valvoline Restore and Protect and am a firm believer in the 4-5000 mile OCI in direct injected, turbo vehicles.

You will most likely be fine. I would be kind of leery just for the fact of the slight differences in the additive packages.

I would probably just buy another court and save the single quart for my lawnmower or something.

I mean is there any reason to not use high mileage oil on a low mileage car?

This is what people don't understand with additives, even the "top brand" off the shelf oil additives like Liquid Moly.

These oils are formulated by labs full of PhD chemists. By introducing new chemicals you can negatively alter the chemical makeup of the oil and its additive package.

I'd try throwing the oil up on FB Marketplace, or a local neighborhood for sale page.

not sure where you got it but maybe just take it back? haha as @Aonarch mentioned above, a lot goes into the additives of this mess...though now thinking about it, i always get gas at a few different places and now wonder if the additives gas companies use can have negative effects if I use another companies gas...nonetheless, you're talking about $30 to get the penzoil?

not sure where you got the valvaline but maybe just take it back or ask to do a swap?

A good practice with gas, is to periodically get a full tank from a different top tier brand.

Meaning if you always get gas at Shell, once in a while go to a QuikTrip, or a Chevron for a full tank of gas.

This is very much overkill, but it can only help, not hurt.

I do this naturally on road trips, so it isn't something that I intentionally do on a day to day basis.

Yeah i'll be honest, I was getting my fuel from Sams Club and Royal Farms until the top tier fuel thread happened. Ive been getting it from Exxon now...which I thought was considered top tier but I havent seen any stickers on the pumps saying they are...but its another .40 a gallon before Exxon and Royal Farms and when ya gotta dump 30+gallons in, it starts to add up.

I would probably just use it for my next oil change and switch back. I can't imagine switching brands is going to do much as long as it is approved for use with the motor. What happens if penzoil stops producing the stuff you use now? Or changes formulation next month but keeps labeling the same?

The only question might be if one has a significantly higher zinc content than the other. Heard that could mess with oxygen sensors and stuff. But I usually have mine done at the dealer, so honestly don't know if its the same every time or not.

I would have less issue using a high mileage oil in a low mileage engine then I would mixing brands.
like I started out with, probably isn’t gonna hurt a damn thing either way. However, I’m not a chemist. I don’t know the exact components in each additive package and how they will react with each other

Me personally, I don’t think five or six bucks is worth taking the risk, but it’s all you brother

Absolutely no reason at all not to run it. It just has more additives for the seal conditioners in most cases.

If you want to nerd out, go over to this website and search for whatever oil you're interested in.

You could also check out Lake Speed Jr's youtube channel. Somewhat entertaining and I find it very informative.......even though he is known as a bit of a shill on BITOG.

Don’t forget to add a BG MOA to every other oil change for the turbo motors

Is this the same stuff the dealer tries to sell me on every once in awhile? I've never had any issues, and maybe they have flagged my account, because I can't recall the last time they tried to sell me on an additive.
