Making the interior bed light turn on/off with tailgate position

I'm happy to have a button I can press inside the bed of the truck, but I would be happier if I didn't need to press it to turn on the bed lights.

Does anyone know or has done an easy mod to make the interior bed light turn on/off automatically with tailgate position? I wish I had this feature because the lights above the rear window that come on when I approach the truck do diddly squat to see what is under a closed tonneau cover at night.

Meanwhile I can't even find the button in the bed of the truck (have been using the dashboard button). Where is it?

when you open the tailgate, standing looking into the bed of the truck, should be on your left close to the tail light on the side wall about 10" up between the tail light and the bed light.

Subscribing to this thread because I want the exact same thing. Really surprised it's not a setting for when you have a tonneau cover.

Ignoring the bit about LED strip lighting, you could build a magnetic switch similar to how they did it here (at about the 10 minute mark):
