my tonneau cover is Bak Bakflip. seems like pretty bed rack friendly per google. anyways, slightly off topic, what's the advantages and disadvantages between overlanding with popup tents VS getting tow trailer for family of 4? my first guess would overlanding allows you to offroading, anything else?

It really just depends on what kind of camping you want to do. I like to go where nobody else is even remotely close, which means driving off-road long distances and on roads trailers wont go. If i was strictly a camp site camper I'd consider a camper for comfort.

What can be done with smaller off-road trailers has certainly advanced recently with companies like Patriot Campers AUS making pop up trailers you can do more technical trail with. But like @mxwrk says, it will still be limiting, especially due to wheelbase towing these behind a truck and not a jeep.

5' 6" bed, so I went with the 52" rack. The only issue I have is that when you go to tighten down the rack to the bed you will deform the top of the bed rails. (They will concave a little bit)

I've done this in previous trucks but being able to sit fully upright in a roof top tent is awfully nice. Not to mention you can still use your full bed for storage when sleeping - extra nice if the weather is inclement.

**Edit: And even better with the GFC camper I can move one of the tent floor panels to be able to stand upright inside. A huge benefit when changing, etc. Not to mention being able to access the inside bed of the truck from the tent.

The only reason I don't do a cap is I use my truck bed for other uses. Loading a dirt bike, helping peeps move, haul alfalfa and it's nice to have an empty bed to just let her get wild sometimes.
(But caps are bad ass because you can keep your belongings safe and secure.)

I do really like those setups but I have the 5’5 bed and I’m 6’1. Also I like to have full use of my truck bed between camping trips. Maybe if it wasn’t my daily I’d set something up like this.

I have the Retrax MX bed cover that has the rails on the side. Then I have some Rhino Rack Cross Bars. I plan to get a basket to put on the cross bars to hold stuff for camping and then I can keep the bed as storage as well. 2 years ago I built an offroad camper. We started tent camping and I decided I wanted to do this in case of inclement weather and so we could explore while camping. I was always uneasy leaving the campsite with only a tent and not being able to lock up any camping gear.

Building a sleeping platform in the bed and I have this tent that has worked well. Usually pulling our travel trailer, but will tent this way on a trip across Canada this summer

RCI does make an extra bracket that allows you to run the tonneau cover with the regular rails. They just look kind of stupid. I have no idea why they stepped up to such a thick base plate while the channel is drastically thinner. The base plates are NOT that critical in structural integrity.
I have the 8" RCI racks and a Roof Nest Condor coming to me right meow.

Grabbed a bed tent for the little ones for beach camping. I'll be sleeping in the teardrop.
They tested it out a few days ago in the yard.
Once I figured it out, I should now be able to pop it up in short time.

That's really nice. Those little girls will never forget the great times they had with there PaPa! And you may be able to get some real sleep in the trailer away from the giggle fest going on in the back of your land yacht.
